SBFY, they have been hitting the catalytic converters here in Phoenix for about the last 6 months....apparently, that "small amount" of precious metals inside are worth from anywhere to $500 to $1000 an ounce....not bad for 15 mins worth of effort! The ones our department has caught in the act aren't even subtle about it, they just crawl under a vehicle, cut the thing off and walk away. Once the word got out tho, anyone who even bent over to check their tires was called in as a thief! Yeah, platinum is going for $1952.5 per Troy oz. right now. Palladium is going for $470.25 per Troy oz. A troy oz. is just a little more than a standard ounce, so it's not much. I don't know how much of these metals are in a catylytic converter, but at those prices it doesn't have to be much. Hell, copper thieves are stealing everything now too. Copper is $3.87 per pound. We had a power sub station get robbed of all the wiring a few months ago. They knocked the power out to almost 2,000 people. I'm surprised they didn't electrocute themselves in the process. All metal prices are up. I started saving my aluminim cans again, because the prices are up to $1.46 per pound and still rising. Tin is up to $10.49 a pound now too, and a lot of things are made out of tin. The thieves are just having a field day.
