I am relatively new to CM however I do spend a lot of time reading the forums and there is a pattern I have noticed...someone will ask a question, or ask for a definition or opinion and immediately people will refer them to past posts, or even list them links to where this same question has been asked.
 
The problem I have with this is not so much that I think it is borderline rude, as if the person is not interested in the said topic, or bored with it it would just just as easy not to post on it at all, (I rarely sense this referral to past posts is done in a helpful way)but it is that just because this particular question was asked and answered by CM members say 6 months ago perhaps someone who has joined in the last 6 months and would like to offer THEIR opinion.
 
I realise some have been here a long time and already offered their point of view on many topics, kudos to them, but maybe someone who has just got here would also like to comment.
 
I think if a topic comes up that a particular person feels has been discussed enough they could just pass it on by and allow someone who has never had the opportunity to do so have a shot. I think this would also go a long way to making us newbies feel the forum also belongs to us, not just to the CM origionals.

I really agree with you. It's one of the reasons I spend most of my time reading posts rather than posting my own. The last thing I want is a page-long link list.

I agree with you up to a point.  It gets tiresome when people post a page of links without offering any other input.  It just seems lazy to me.
 
However, those past threads can and do prove useful.  For example, I was recently looking for some ideas to help me spark my creativity so I could design protocols for my household.  Links to past threads helped me find exactly what I wanted without having to dig through the archives for hours.  Combined with new posts, I've come up with several workable options. 
 
IMO, the lists of past threads are okay as long as there is also fresh material to go with them.

I am always puzzled why people ask sincere questions and then get upset when an easy reference list of answers from multiple years and multiple perspectives is just handed to them.  I guess they really do only want the half dozen or so people who happen to be reading and happen to be posting at that particular time to answer,, and aren't interested in how answers might shift over time or different ways of looking at the same issue?

As well, posting a list of links doesn't prevent anyone else from posting whatever response they want.

My issue is that generally I've already answered that question at least about five different ways and unless my perspective on that topic has shifted since the last time, I find it's a much more honest response to give them ALL of my answers held within the links, as well as the context in which they were given, rather than just copy and paste or flip off some quick few liner nothing answer.

I guess you call it lazy, I call it being thorough and conscientious of history.

For me personally it is not so much the "lists" and I agree past answers would hold lots of valuable information, it is more the posts that I see that say, oh this has been asked and asked, why dont you just search it, I even saw one where someone was so kind (coughs) and to basically draw the poster a map to the where they would find the search engine.

I do not mean the people that are truly trying to add to the information available, I address this to those who make newbies feel like our questions are foolish, or answer in a rolled eyes tone.

The ones that do it know who they are, and the ones that don't also know their motives, I do not mean this to anyone who is sincerely trying to help with past answers.

To me, it feels more sincere to give a short summary of my views as an introduction and then give links.  It doesn't take a lot of time and it conveys the attitude that I'm interested in providing help rather than that I can't be bothered with an original reply.

It really depends on the context.  When someone walks into a library and says "I need to know about penguins" what is the best thing to do? 

We are in a net discussion forum group, there is a culture in that and it will be balanced out.  If someone were to ask the "sub vs slave" question in five months after NO ONE had asked that question for that long, you'd probably get a few pages of seriously good stuff going.

If someone then came around the next week and asked the same question, they wouldn't get that response.  It's not their fault of timing, it's just how discussion dynamics flow. 

It would be a mistake to take personal offense about it also- there IS a search function and it SHOULD be used.  I'm darn good at it and enjoy using it so I help out a lot, but someone shouldn't be pissed off if they are told to use the card catalogue rather than take them by the hand and literally put a book on penguins in their hand.

There is that.  Although, in the noob's defense, they may not know it's not original.  I manage other forums where we see the same old chestnuts over and over ad nauseum.  Half the time the newbies don't know how or where to get info because they scarcely know how to ask the question.  And thus the FAQ was born.  I wish there was one here -- it would cut down on the repeat performances.

Some people appreciate it, some people don't.  In the big scheme of things, it's not something I would spend my energy being bugged about.  It's extra info.  If someone doesn't want extra info, skip over it!  I see it as someone went through the trouble to do the search for you.  And the lists aren't just for the OP but for anyone reading the thread.  Is there really such thing as too much information here?

Not as rude as posting in this tiny font, it's disrespectful to your whorey - I mean hoary, elders - people are looking for information and posting links gives them a chance to do some research if they're really interested - the same topics ocme up over and over again, but each time, differnt posteers with different viewpoints contribute. This is good, because people often post with the idea that their opinions are somehow the definitive, condensed wisdom of all mankind - not.

Scroll past if you're not interested, I've never noticed it actually causing any great disruption to threads.

Those who don't like the links should just ignore them. They are almost always posted to give the OP additional information on the topic, not to stifle the current thread. [sm=beatdeadhorse.gif]

all i say is no way to make everyone happy... I've been here awhile... reading more than I post and everyone has different opinions.

I agree with ownedgirlie when she said that thing about being glad someone did the research for you. If you only want to read answers to your question then just ignore the links... but that one time when no one else answers your question because it was dicussed in a 7 page thread the week before with lots of info about whether or not you should got to that hotel room and fuck those 10 guys for someone you dont know ( I had to use it BR just to good to pass up lol) don't go looking LA asking her for links....

people who post whether by typing out a response or taking the time to search for links are only trying to help... and by suggesting that you use the search option... well maybe they are just making you aware that its there... i for one didnt know about it until a month or two after being a member... maybe someone posted an answer that was written really well and really got the point across and they happen to like it, instead of rewriting it where it could lose some of its beauty they give you the link... dont cry about it.
