Both times that i have watched the DaVinci Code i have wondered if the monk who flogs himself could really flog himself hard enough on his back to tear the skin like it shows.  Is that possible?

It also depends on how many times and with what sort of scourge...

Yes. One time with my volunteer emergency squad we had to go catch some nutty woman who was wandering the streets flagellating herself screaming "Bring Out Your Dead! The End Is Near".... Apparently she thought that SARs signalled the beginning of the rapture or the return of the black death or Stephen King's The Stand or something. Her back was a mess, there were not just cuts but chunks missing... I cant even begin to imagine how many stitches she needed, and Id bet she needed restorative surgery as well...

I kept wondering how he maintained consciousness after those self-flagellation experiences.

Never under estimate the power of small changes over multiple trials.  Every canyon has a river.

Since I've managed to cut myself with a whip on accident I have to assume a determined, twisted, soul could do it on purpose.

Did you read the book, proudsub?  It's really a lot better than the movie was, IMO, and he explains the self-scourging better than the movie did.  I read the book first and couldn't put it down....then saw the movie and was kind of disappointed.

I hear they're making the sequel, which was actually the prequel to Davinci Code, Angels & Demons.  Much gorier than Davinci Code, but still a great read.

that sounds more like someone having a terrifying monty python flashback to me.

this whole thread is interesting. thanks for posting proudsub. i know in shi'a islam self-flagellation during certain celebrations is sometimes practiced but i'm really unfamiliar with it (i follow a different tradition), and other than that and the da vinci code this is a new topic for me.

During the middle ages there was a band of nuts called "The Flagellants" who went town to town across europe scouring themselves and carrying crosses in an effort to stop the plauge. The would have been better off killing rats but alas modern science had not taken hold LOL

The movie has been in the making since around the same time Da Vinci Code came out. There was something in the news the other, about the Church banning them from filming in any Church. I didn't catch all of it I was thru the break the break room at work...
And for those of you who like the DaVinci Code, read the The Last Templar... good read, puts a different twist on the whole Holy Grail theory.
