Hi!

I have had a problem with my computer that I thought I had resolved, but it's back.

Whenever I scroll through a Microsoft application, usually a little too quickly, the application will  freeze and so will everything else. I can move the cursor on the screen, but that's about it. I have to do the "CTRL-ALT-DEL" thing. This doesn't happen with any non-Microsoft applications. It isn't related to disk error check or defrag. I've thought about space because my hard drive is pretty full - but then why would non-Microsoft applications not suffer? I'm using Windows ME and before you say "upgrade", I will be getting a new computer. But for now, if anyone knows of a possible solution, I'd appreciate it! :)

ME is horribly buggy and there isn't a whole lot that can be done about this if you won't/can't upgrade/downgrade to another flavor of Windows.

Diagnosing the problem is not really possible from your description but I'm guessing the problem is caused by MS applications doing a lot more under the hood during a scroll than other applications. Which with ME's problems results in some sort of loop that the OS gets locked into. You can try downloading all the available patches for the OS and affected applications but I doubt it will help.

You're right. It doesn't help.  I have all of the patches, upgrades, etc. that I am able to have. ME is no longer supported. I've actually been wanting to buy a new computer for over a year now. I balked at buying another PC because of all of the stuff I heard about Vista. Then, at one point, I decided to buy a Mac laptop. Then I decided to wait for the upgrade. Then it was awaiting the new O.S. A number of things have happened this year that made me decide to put off buying one. Hopefully I will get the thing purchased by the end of this month. I'd still like to keep my laptop PC though because of the number of Windows based items I have. Eventually I'll convert everything over.

Right now I'm trying to find the bit I found online about removing all the restore points except the most recent. Are you familiar with how to do this by any chance?

Oh! And thank you for responding. :)

It might help to kill some of the uneccessary processes running in the background.  I have to do that to play some of the games i play.

Vista has Readyboost!! all you need is a USB memory stick and you just boosted your memory. I have a one gig memory stick and added an extra 860 megs to mine! I just bought off of ebay a 4gb just so that I could kick ass with games!

I didn't know that about vista... still on XP here (and likely to stay there for some time yet).

The OP is on ME.  I agree with the others... once you get your new PC, these issues should clear.  ME was a nightmare for me too.

Oh, it won't be a new PC cantilena, it's going to be a Mac! :)

I'm just going to have to clean up my hard drive and continue to look for the info about the Restore files.
Proudsub: There is that, but I know there has to be something simpler. What a pain in the @$$!

Long Story, Short.

The microsoft applications are using a library which is incompatible with ME. The other applications aren't using that library, so are unaffected.

Welcome to Microsoft's business model. Eventually, you'll get so frustrated you'll upgrade to what they PROMISE won't totally suck.
