Usually I'd say it's a way to disagree with someone higher in a hierarchy (this applies outside BDSM for sure, like the army, or Japan's society as a whole). It's a way to say it without implying you don't know your place

Agreed.  I sometimes say it when I am about to differ with someone and I want them to know it's NOT because I DO disrespect them in anyway.  For instance, the other day I posted something in disagreement with a statement made by another poster here.  I don't know anything about her but what I've read here but, from that, I like her.  I think she's genuinely a neat person who is honest and aboveboard and a very likable soul.  I strongly disagreed with a statement she made and I wanted to tell her and others so.  I did NOT, however, want it to come off like I was disrespecting her or her thoughts in general.  So I started off with "With all due respect...."  and I really meant it.  It's not always a sarcastic statement meant to imply no respect at all, believe me.  If I DIDN'T have any respect for the person, I wouldn't indicate I did.................luci

This is an awesome topic.  I love it.

My pet can say anything he likes to me, and if it's something I don't want to hear (e.g. "Miss, you should get your ankle X-rayed so that you can be sure it's only sprained, not broken.") then I can respond with:  "Giving me orders, are you?"  Usually that's followed with, "Just advising, Miss, and trying to take proper care of you..."

I always try to remember when I've given broad edicts like "Help me stop drinking soda" that it can be handled in multiple ways.  "Miss, you said you weren't going to drink sodas any more" being quite a bit more preferrable than walking up and snatching the drink from my hand, right?

This goes right along with the "remind me to..." in our household. It is typically profoundly unfair to ask this of our servants -- I already know that I don't want to do whatever it is, and will block it out of my mind at the first opportunity... but someone has to be the bunny-bait, right? One of my former servants use to make a joke out of this... xhe'd come in and say "Big Ben on the wall says that it's time for Mistress to (insert whatever I was trying to forget)." It didn't make me any less cross, but it was cute, and kept me from shooting the messenger.

Yep.  I try to think of it like an alarm clock.  I can't get angry at my alarm clock when I set it for 5am, any more than I can get angry at my pet when I set him to remind me of something I don't want to do either.

Not that the urge isn't there sometimes, but as long as I'm relatively awake, I do try to be rational.

Tell your boi to learn to bake low calorie, high protein sugar cookies with Splenda, wheat protein isolate, whey protein powder, nonfat cream cheese, egg whites and a bit of oat flour.  Really, they come out totally delicious when dusted with cinnamon and Splenda.
