Status: offline 		Right then.  I would like some ear plugs.  What do you suggest?

Does any place send free samples?

The summer is noisey due to fireworks, outdoor radios, kids screaming, and the highway- vehicles, lawn mowers .....  So Ild like some ear plugs for around the house.

I wonder what would be best?   

What works for you?

Status: offline 		Just the other day I was thinking that having ear plugs in at work would mean I'd get more done. I'm currently asking ear plug suppliers to furnish me with quotes and specifications for their products so that I may make an informed decision. I'll let you know when the ear plug tendering process is complete.

As far as free samples go - a whole freaking box of 200 pair is only $20 hardly a budget breaker LOL I wouldnt go writing too many letters requesting a sample of a 10 cent product. ...

(From the site)  I've used these and can say they're worth the money, and do all they promise.

Its important to note these are not combat ready, and probably not strong enough to put your face in a subwoofer at a local punk rock show that thinks volume makes up for a lack of attendance.  Man, I wish I had ear plugs that night.

I wear them around the house if I am doing something noisy like using a chain saw or my table saw...  Hearing protection is hearing protection. The high vis ones are easy to find in the garage as opposed to "where the fuck did I put those...."

Ear plugs are not as good hearing protection as ear muffs due to the fact sound will also enter the hearing canal through the skull around the ears.

Yes I know, thats why I issue the hi-viz muffs and have the plugs for guests... I personally find the muffs more comfortable as I dont like putting anything in my ear.. (However, in some cases - like if we are running an engine, particularly a jet engine, in the hangar Ill actually put plugs in under the muffs.) The pair I took home is the muff type in my first link....

In situations like that, field strip a ciggarette butt and rip it in half and stuff it in the ears. It will save your eardrums from getting damaged. I wouldn't recommend a used butt though.

OP> Go to a local gun store or Wally world. They sell the low cost plugs pretty cheap. If you are looking for a nicer pair, I would also recommend the same type of muffs that DA posted. My pair are old aircraft carrier muffs and I could be standing next to a thousand screaming subbies and fall alseep without a problem.

You're right about the protection, but any headphones that put enough pressure on my head to block any real amount of sound give me a throbbing headache after a few hours.  I can HEAR my heartbeat in my head.

For what DA was describing, I'd go big on the ear protection as saying "Sorry Honey, what?" too many times can lead to damaged testicles.

Second the ER-20's. It's what Wife#1 uses. ( I have a set of custom fitted earmolds with -15dB filters in, myself, but for me they're a professional expense, so I don't expect everyone to spend 150$ at the audiologist... )

I never used them, but they said they worked the best. They also have some reusable ones on another page.

Years ago when I worked at a plant, we used a disposable popcorn type- [1984-ish]   they werent too functional when they were 1/2 in, 1/2 out.

DA,  that link with the vests are fairly cheap -if they are the heavier plastic.   I was browsing bike accessories, that is intriguing.
If I can carry groceries - --and expand uses... which I love telling the oil company that I wont be filling up as often.

Sometimes I bike downtown- and it is actually quiter there.   lol.

At 44 I do look better in the vest- then I do in spandex.   ;-0

I understand this ... i'm 48, female and ride, definitely no spandex, i wear a vest i bought from a workwear store ... it'd be a good place for teh ear muffs too.  (i had to have a hearing test and while i've lost some hearing in one ear canal or drum the sound is picked up through my scull, just below the ear lobe.  so yep the muffs are the way to go ... rather than the plugs.

Status: offline 		I use the ones that look and work like little sponge tubes.  You squeeze them, shove them into your ear, and they expand and block out a great deal of the noise.  Cheap, too, a package of 20 of them ( I think ) is about three bucks.
