KLRDan -> Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/4/2008 11:58:46 PM)

I bought a Kawasaki KLR 650 a few months ago (that's why there's a "KLR" in my name) and am madly in love with it. It gets 50-60 MPG depending on how aggressively I ride, will go 300-350 miles on a tank, gobbles up curbs, train tracks, and speed bumps with a smile (my current record on a nearby speed bump-infested road is 70 MPH--hey, they shouldn't have put them there if they didn't want to tempt me!), and by all accounts is about as simple and easy to work on as a bike could be. (I've done no maintenance of my own yet.) Here's a link to an article about it: http://www.motorbyte.com/mmm/pages/2002reviews/review52.htm

I plan to do some solo camping this summer. It's hard to imagine a better vehicle for making a beeline to the middle of nowhere than this one.

Though I've already started looking at other bikes I might like to ride in the future--the Victory Hammer and Harley Road King are the first that come to mind--I'll always remember the KLR as my first love. Like the best women, she's not pretty, but she'll go anywhere. (Just kidding!)

On another note, I now understand why bikers call cars "cages." Actually, cars have always struck me as cage-like, at least ever since I became 6'6". It's a rare car that doesn't have me holding the steering wheel with my knees, bumping my head on the roof, crouching at stoplights, and looking into the rearview mirror when I'm trying to see forward. Riding a bike (at least this bike) does more than lets me feel the wind and connect to the road; it frees me from a host of irritating and dangerous problems that most car drivers never even have to deal with. (Granted, the KLR doesn't fit quite perfectly either--the pegs are too close to the seat--but there's an easy solution to that problem, and I intend to avail myself of it shortly.)

But I also think I understand why bikers who've never had their bodies squashed by cars call cars cages. Once you've fallen in love with bikes, driving a car--especially through a beautiful place, and especially with the windows up--is like--please forgive the obvious comparison from a testosterone-crazed brain--watching an orgy from behind a glass wall. You know what you'd be feeling if you were in the experience yourself, or at least you have some idea, and you'll become crazy if you let yourself think about it. You'd almost rather not see the naked bodies, or the trees and streams and hills, at all. At least that's how it is for me. The desire is not quite so intense, but the principle is the same.

So what do you ride? What have you ridden? If you've ridden more than one, do you have a favorite? I'm especially interested to hear from sportbike owners because I'll probably never ride a sportbike myself. (All but the most powerful are much too small for my body, and I'm really no speed demon, the occasional 70-mph speed bump romp notwithstanding.)

My sled is an 04 HD FLSTC...Heritage Classic...20" Apehangers, 2 1/4" straight pipes, the windshield was the first thing to go. Have ridden cross country with it, north to south in November (that was a cold fucking ride) I don't own a cage and haven't for many years, right now it's a crap shoot whether I get pulled over for excessive handlebar height, but it is what it is. As a retired patch-holder I've lived, eaten and breathed Harley Davidson most of my life. The first bike I ever rode was a Rupp mini bike, then onto Brit Shit with a 69 chopped out 3 lunger and then onto HD. I've owned as many as 3 sleds at a time. For me it's a way of life, many don't understand that and never will. It's not a fad, it's not a fashion statement and it's not a status symbol, as many recently have made it out to be in my opinion. So whatever ya ride, ride safe, watch out for the fucking cages and put some wind in your face...

Started legally in England at 16 with a Yamaha FS1E ... the originally fizzy fifty as they were called, an older bike but unrestricted like the newer ones (restricted to 35mph until 17).

At 17 moved onto a Honda CB125, old 4 stroke that wasn't terribly fast but pulled all day without a beat.

Suzuki 250GT, the original ton up 250, fast with a little work and lots of fun.

Kawasaki GPZ 1100 ..... damn that bike was fast for it's day, kind of silly as an everyday ride as the temptation to roll that throttle wide open was just too grin inducing.

Suzuki GSXR 1100 .... the bike that ultimately lost me my bike license ...... did some silly things but the one that still makes me grin in an idiotic way is being hauled up in court and shown a picture of me sitting it on the back wheel and the radar gun showing 110mph ...whoops [8|]

The bikes got lost in the mists of time, I was young, had an unnatural fascination with the red line and seeing just what it would do in every gear ...... but even now, older and wiser I won't buy another because 99% of the car drivers on the road scare the crap out of me. I'm comfortable with my safety when riding, but seeing the state of my Dad after one too many people "didn't see him" ... thanks but no thanks.

I miss my leathers, miss the look of confusion as people ask why the knees were all torn up ... and miss the look of horror as they realised that the knees were torn up because putting a bike that low is fun. I miss the roads where 60mph feels like 160mph just because they twist and are tight ... and I miss the summer Sunday mornings when bikes suddenly appear from nowhere and everyone is heading off to enjoy the countryside ..... and doing it safely and having fun.

Honda goldwing, although I only ride on the back of that.. an 02 1800 ... we've taken that all over the country and back and to Canada.. camping and not... we're getting ready for our summer long trip, we leave on Wednesday...

also BMW K75 and then there's a Harley in the garage, but for the amount of riding we do, its too uncomfortable for both of us.. together or single...

My first bike was a 1969 Triumph Bonneville 650  http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Directories/Triumph%20Bikes/pages/Triumph-Bonneville-T120-69.htm

I've had many Japanese bikes since but I bought Triumph Bonneville last year, nostalgia got the better of me, not really the same bike, just similar styling but a great bike. http://www.triumph.co.uk/holland/Bonneville%20T100_2788.aspx

An '02 Suzuki SV650 is my main ride, outfitted for touring... Went cross country on it this February, and i take it to work 3-4 days a week. Also have a bob-job '80 Honda CX500, and occasionally ride my wife's Honda Shadow 600. Have an old Honda V65 Sabre that i'm trying to get back on the road.

i love the SV, tho... quick, nimble, light, all-day comfortable (Sargent seat)... it just moves effortlessly.

I've owned a motorcycle for the last 5 years.  Never ridden anything beyond a dirt bike.  Yet my motorcycle is a Honda C-750 I believe.
It's too large for me.  I inherited it years before my father passed.  He didn't want anyone else to get their hands on it.
I've no clue what to do with it.

I'm told its a touring motorcycle?

Moron cagers are the reason  I don't ride on the streets anymore.
I still ride dirtbikes (CRF250R, CRF450R and a KX100) I still have my CBR1000RR.

I ride on the back of a 06 Heritage Softail Classic.

TheIronHorse -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 11:02:27 AM)

I have a 1995 FLSTN that I have ridden since new.   I use it for two up riding.

The bar hopper I am building is a 200mm tire rigid chopper with a custom built shovelhead motor w/magneto ignition.

KLRDan -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 11:56:17 AM)

Yeah, in the short time I've been riding I've already had a few close calls that were entirely the cagers' fault. Just the other day I was stopped at a light on a road that didn't have any painted traffic markings because the asphalt had just been redone. There were only reflectors to divide the lanes. The right lane was for going straight or right, the left was only for turning left--I knew that because I'd been on the road a hundred times before it was worked on. I was in the right lane and there was a woman in an SUV in the left lane next to me. When the light turned green, I went straight and so did she--nearly ran me off the road. I have a cruiser-riding friend who kicked a nice dent in somebody's Porsche when they pulled a similar stunt, but unfortunately I wasn't wearing the boots for it. [:D]

CruelDesires -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 12:05:32 PM)

I always wear heavy boots when riding to protect the feet and ankles if I go down. Whenever I see someone on a sport bike wearing sneakers or sandles, I chuckle. To each their own. *shrugs*

I'd be wearing boots now if it weren't for the aforementioned problem of the pegs being too close to the seat for my long legs. I don't want to worsen that problem by wearing boots/shoes with thick soles.

CruelDesires -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 12:32:38 PM)

Can you get extended pegs?

CD

KLRDan -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 12:38:22 PM)

Yeah. I'm going to do that, as well as get handlebar risers and raise the seat, if possible. The only downside is, if I ever decide to sell it, I'll only be able to sell it to a fellow giant. I can't see myself doing that, though.

CruelDesires -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 12:39:45 PM)

Just save the OE parts and sell them with the bike. :)

BigBeninLA -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 12:59:20 PM)

I ride a 2004 BMW R1150RT.  It's my first bike.  I bought it this past April from a private party in Salt Lake City and rode it back to Los Angeles.  It's a terrific sport tourer; sporty enough for the twisties, and comfortable enough for the long rides (once I figured out how to adjust the seat to fit my 6-3 frame).

BlackKnight -> RE: Motorcycle riders, what do you ride? (7/5/2008 1:01:35 PM)

2003 Honda Valkyrie, 1500cc 6cyl box, 'a goldwing that looks like a motorcycle'
it was the last year of this production model, smooth, quiet, ...Heaven. The sheer joy of ridding her is unmeasurable.
