No, thankfully this is not my cat and I don't know this woman either but something about this caught my eye and tugged at my heart. I guess owning two cats myself, I know how devestated I would be if either of them contracted something and I couldn't pay the bills to make it ok.

Oh and by the way ... Hello. I'm Dawn and I lurk on these forums a lot.

Not likely as they provided a contact number for the vet ...It is often one of the things people do not consider when getting a pet, illness or injury...and it is a lot harder to let a pet go when you know that the condition is operable and they likely have spent a few hundred on the testing already ..I know in the case of one of my dogs the vet had noted during the physical exam that something was not right with his abdomen, so we ran xrays $100, which shoould his spleen was extremely enlarged  ..so the next step in the process  was to do a needle aspiration to take tissue samples of several areas of the spleen, needed to be put under to do so $150 plus $75 for testing , it did not show cancer but it could not rule it out, so I agreed to an ultrasound $500 ,  no abnormal areas over the course of the next  year did 4 more xrays to ensure not growing  and causing a potential obstruction ..one was an emergency as he stopped eating and was vomiting so was worried the spleen rotated and result in bloating so about another $500, we want to be sure that is was not related to tick disease ..so another $300..final diagnosis was hyperspleenism  solution leave as is , since the spleen is function  grand total to do nothing $1625..my other dog was also found to have health issues, Lupus and blood was failing to clot, she was also diagnosed with Babesia a tick disease   that year my vet bills for were almost $10,000..the prior year had been dealing with a torn ligament $2500 for surgery and bone cancer in the same dog which I ended up having to put down as there is no cure for bone cancer  ...so in a very short period of time I was hit with one hell of a lot of unexpected vet bills and i had to cash in some of my retirement funds to pay the bills..if I did not have that ..I might have been begging as well .  but 6 years later I still have those dogs and luckily no more big emergencies .

I might be wrong but I think you were saying, if you can't afford the costs, you shouldn't have any animals ...

My reply to that is ...

When a person takes in a pet they don't sit there and plan to have that pet become ill enough to require thousands of dollars worth of medical care. No more than when you have a baby you plan for it to be born with a disability or have an accident or whatever ...

I mean, you plan for the normal things, sure. Don't adopt a pet (or have a baby) if you can't provide the basics but this goes beyond the basics, I think. Its one of those unfortunate fluke circumstances that could happen to anyone and would pretty much blindside ya, either way.

I don't think its a scam, hopelessfool. Had she not posted the vet info, I'd say yeah ... Maybe a scam. Anyone asking for money to be sent to like paypal or whatever smacks of scammery and evilness. This seems pretty legit though. She's asking for money to be sent directly to the animal's vet; not her bank account.

I'm so sorry your poor dogs went through so much, Maya! My dog got hit by a car when she was about a year old and it took me forever to pay off her medical bills. Fortunately my vet allowed me to do installments. If he hadn't, I don't know what I would have done.

As of yesterday, I took in a kitten off the street and I've already shelled out over $150 for him to get the medical care he needs. Vaccinations, dewormer, etc etc etc ... He's cute though and worth it, in my opinion.
