BOGOTA, Colombia - Colombia freed Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. military contractors from leftist guerrillas on Wednesday after military spies tricked rebels into giving them up without a single injury, the defense minister said. In all, the operation freed 15 hostages including Colombian soldiers and police, Juan Manuel Santos said.

The rescue is the most serious blow ever dealt to the 44-year-old Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, who considered Betancourt and the three Americans their most valuable bargaining chips.

I never thought it would happen.  I was sure they would all die in the jungle.  I'm glad I was wrong.

I hear that Hugo Chavez was instrumental in resolving the FARC issue.

Good news indeed; part of me wishes they would just go in there and slaughter the FARCers.

Im glad they got the three American military contractors and the columbian soldiers and police out of there... As for the French bitch, who cares... She got exactly what she asked for ... They told her it wasn't safe, they even denied her military air transport because it was unsafe for the Columbian Army to take her into the DMZ... She was warned and warned and warned by professional soldier who knew what kind of an enemy they faced. They warned her again at the last checkpoint but Ms Know-it-all went anyway.  The rest is history...  In her first campaign she distrubted condoms because she would "be like a condom against corruption"... She wound up like a condom ok - full of dicks, cum, and bloodborne pathogens... Wonder how she got her Hep B? LOL Thank God no military personell, either US or Columbian were killed getting this fruitcake out....

Edited to add: Before people start jumping on me about being heartless, people need to take a certain amount of responsibility for their own safety and to use a little common sense.  When the Army says no way, and an Army helicopter pilot - which is a special breed of man somewhere between fearless, suicidal, and just plain crazy - wont go there because the area is too hot thats a very good clue to stay the hell out of that particular combat zone even if you are "like a condom"... (and WTF is up with that nuttiness! LOL)

"When the Army says no way,"

Given the "Go along to get along", "Just obeying my orders", and moral relativity displayed by soldiers, why would you think they have any credibility?

Like YOU SAID ABOUT YOURSELF in the other thread about rats: your fidelity to your oaths is dependent on the likelihood of being CAUGHT breaking that solemn word.

How can people like that expect *anyone* to actually trust them?

Chavez didn't have anything to do with this.  It was just damn fine work on the behalf of the Columbian police and military.

Supposedly the FARC impersonators from the Columbian authorities showed up wearing Che T-shirts.

LOL so Chavez helped by providing camoflage (ie the FARC folks thought the soldiers were sympathetic because they wer wearing Chavez T shirts) so they thought they were freinds instead of Columbian Military. LOL.

Great big Instrumental help.
