I have the AVG free version.
It updates free on a daily basis.
I just had to set it up that way.

The best security is common sense. If it looks like a bad idea to open or click on it probably is. If I could only convince my brother of that... *sigh*

Personally I use AVG, CCleaner, S&D, & Auslogics Defrag to keep my system up. It's done pretty well so far.

Best antivirus you do not have to purchase would be AVG or Avast.

Totally agreed. I removed Kaspersky a couple of years ago and use Avast, its awesome.

For home use Avast or AVG will work fine. I prefer avast since I do like to watch stuff over streams and AVG made that pretty hard. For business use Symantec really is a great product. I find it a tad too intrusive for home use but in a corporate environment where IT configures the systems and gets all the bugs out and then mass distributes everything it works great.

Although in most cases AV software really isn't a big worry. Having a good firewall, zone alarm is the minimum standard, as well as correctly configuring your browser and following some basic rules about handling email and browsing, never ever open an attachment you weren't expecting, never sign up for joke of the day emails or the like, never click through an ad, never install some cursor or other goofy crap from some website etc. and you'll be fine. Run a spyware scan every few days and alternate between two seperate scanners when doing so. Keep your OS, firewall and AV programs up to date and keep your data backed up and you should be just fine.

I use AVAST on my regular use computer which I use when I visit hacker sites, web code sites, and a variety of porn.  When a bad data stream comes in, it lets me know asap.
I also use AVG free on my second computer.  It is set to do a weekly scan which takes way too long and uses too much energy, but that may be more a vista issue.  Even though my vista has 2G of ram.
I prefer AVAST, because it allows me to do an outside of windows scan for when I put clients hard drives on my computer.
We give out AVG because you can be brain dead and it will run.

You should have only one antivirus.  But you need two antispyware products.  Spybot is still an old and reliable favorite, but my current new toy is called Malwarebytes.  I LOVE that one!

But if you really want to keep the bad ad type crap to pop up on your computer, go into internet explorer options, manage add-ons, and disable the windows messenger.  It is not the chat componet of windows, it is the fuction that allows people to link up an ad.

I was reading that AVG 8.0 has this link-checker thingy, which is driving websites nuts, as it pre-fetches every link on the page. Slashdot says they were seeing 6% of their traffic coming from this bundled-malware.

I hear that it can be disabled, too. Check with AVG if it's an issue for you. ( I saw that some webmasters were going to just block users from their sites... but YMMV, of course... )

We have www.spynomore.com.  I discovered it when McAfee told me I had a certain virus but McAfee couldn't seem to get rid of it so I searched and spynomore claimed they would rid me of it and they did. That was about 3 years ago and I haven't had any problems since.  There's a modest one time charge.
