As I sit here listening to tonight's news, I hear that gas thefts are on the rise. Gas Thefts on the Rise \| Newsweek Future Of Energy \| Newsweek.com I have a gas tank that you need a key to open or you can open it from inside the car. I hope that is enough security. I wonder if they will start making alarms for gas tanks soon? Do I need to get a fuel lock beyond what I have?

with gas 4.49 a gallon in my area theft is on rise here as well. [:@]

the station across from my house is 3.89.... down from 3.99 last week. as far as I've seen they're the cheapest in the area

I'd recommend a steel casing for your gas tank. don't know if that's feasible but somebody should make it. I had a friend that had gas siphoned out of her truck.. man was she pissed. and that was two years ago.

To tell you the truth, I am going to have to wait until it either becomes epidemic OR it happens to me! I have a med-sized car, why siphon my gas with all the damn big SUV's around?

How about one of those super sensitive alarms that sound off when a leaf falls on the hood? Either that or a sticker warning that a pit viper is in the car.

LOL, that super sensitive alarm would not last long, my neighbors would run me out of town. Hummmm, the sticker warning might work.

Nah, the locks on those locking gas caps are junk... if somebody has already forced the fuel door open, they'll force the cap just as quick. Had to do it on my own truck once, after that i just got rid of the cap.

yeah they drill a hole in a truck and take $1200.00 worth of gasoline and sell it. they can also drill a hole in your tank as was reported up above in this thread... I hope gasoline prices go down for all of us. Right now it is $4.59 here in sunny california...

Dont bother. I can and have opened locking gas caps with a screwdriver or slide hammer. Ive defeated just about every kind of lock there is. One time I had an aircraft mechanic leave on bad terms (somebody leaked that he was being fired the next morning due to the smell of alcohol on his breath, the presence of Mad Dog 20 / 20 in his toolbox, and paperwork errors that are simply unforgiveable etc. ) and in some kind of misguided attempt at extoring a severance package he put padlocks on everything.... Toolboxes, padlocked chains wrapped around aircraft props, hell he even padlocked the shithouse... All of the padlocks were gone before he stumbled in that next morning - even the one on his tool box which got pretty well cleaned out by the other guys who were amply and justifiably pissed LOL. Anyone with a modicum of mechanical ability and a $5 slide hammer can pop the lock on those in seconds.

~ Fast Reply ~ My daughter, driving a relatively small tank SAAB, had her gas siphoned while parked in a garage in the South Bay. The lock didn't help, they pried it open and drained it. Did more damage to the car than the cost of the gas. From what I here siphoning and making a hole and draining tanks (even more destructive and costly) is becoming very prevalent in LA. Gas is nearly $5/gallon; some people aren't netting per an hour's work the price of a gallon of gas.

I have to agree with everyone here....a locking gas cap or door is easy prey for thieves....all they have to do is pry the door, and drill out or punch out the lock. But I'd rather have to replace a fuel door or cap than a gas tank. One thing that seems to be going on around here is that folks aren't filling their tanks with any more gas than they can afford to lose. There are lots of folks running around with only about 1/4 of a tank of gas right now. AAA says they are taking more gas to people because they are running out.....I had to remind my friend that if she's gonna do that, then she needs to remember that in the heat, gas expands, and it looks like you have more gas than you really do. She thought I was crazy til I showed her...she had 80 miles on 1/4 tank, I opened the cap, and "WHOOSH!", right down to nothing...the fuel light came on. She now pays attention to that.
