Barnicle may be slightly biased.  He and Imus go way back.

C`mon now sb,he can be a bigot on the street corner and at home or on airtime he`s bought and payed for. That`s where the rights of free speech start to end.

He can`t just say anything on a program sponsered by people who don`t want their beer, car, shoes or widgits to be associated with assclown dopes like Imus.

It was when the people who were buying commercial spots on his show started to call and complain, that he got the boot.

Owner, I don't think he means to be bigoted.  I think he's an old man that never got used to the changes that have occurred in the last 20 or 30 years.  He's three years older than my father, and you should hear some of the shit that comes out of his mouth.  It absolutely makes me cringe sometimes, but I don't say anything.

People obviously listen to Imus, or he wouldn't be on the air still.  The advertisers haven't bailed on him yet, and I don't think they are going to.  The only people that complain are the people that don't like him anyway.  Why in the hell are the people monitoring the airwaves just waiting for a chance to pounce on some old guy?  Jesus, let the guy have his show.  He's not reading Mein Kampf on the air.  He's just says stupid shit a lot of times.  I don't listen to him.  I don't listen to talk radio at all unless I am on a road trip.  People can make the same choice I do if they hate listening to these people.

Interesting...

Based upon the comments in this thread, the assumption is that this radio interplay exhibited racial prejudice:
quote:

When Wolf said Jones had been "arrested six times since he was drafted by Tennessee in 2005," Imus responded by asking "What color is he?"

"He's African-American," Wolf said
.

Apparently attempting, and obviously failing, humor though the use of prejudicial stereotypes is a bigger politically incorrect crime than Mr. Jones living up to them.

Yes sir! Affirmative action and equal opportunity sure has worked well. Situations like these point to the necessity of making excuses, continuing to set the bar lower, and maintain lower standards for some because obviously they aren't equipped to deal with life and society on equal terms. Considering Mr. Imus past, maybe Mr. Jones was just living up to him as a bad example, albeit an economically successful one.

It's me. I'm just slow and have trouble understanding how that position is less prejudicial than Mr. Imus' question.

Owner59 -> RE: Don Imus redux (6/24/2008 10:22:56 AM)

Could someone on 'this' Imus thread explain away his producer`s "Jiggaboo" comment?

Or Imus`s lake of a proper response to it?

And yes,Imus got another job.But that doesn`t mean he shouldn`t have had his pee-pee smacked for being an asshole.

Never made a sympathetic remark about Hitler and the Nazis?

For your edification, from the Chicago Tribune August 25, 1977, his column:

"Those of us in childhood during the war years were introduced to Hitler only as caricature. Either he was a ranting, raving, carpet-chewing Chaplinesque buffoon -- or the anti-Christ, Satan Incarnate, a devil without human attribute who had hypnotized the German people.
Such ignorance is folly. Though Hitler was indeed racist and anti-Semitic to the core, a man who without compunction could commit murder and genocide, he was also an individual of great courage, a soldier's soldier in the Great War, a political organizer of the first rank, a leader steeped in the history of Europe, who possessed oratorical powers that could awe even those who despised him.
But Hitler's success was not based on his extraordinary gifts alone. His genius was an intuitive sense of the mushiness, the character flaws, the weakness masquerading as morality that was in the hearts of the statesmen who stood in his path."

You don't find that at all sympathetic?  Not even when Pat gushes about his "extraordinary gifts" or his "intuitive sense" or alludes to his great knowledge of European history when virtually every teacher Hitler ever had found him a below average and diffident student?  In Mein Kampf, Hitler in point of fact reveals a great *lack* of understanding of European History.  Read the book.  It's senseless.....

As for his issues with Black America, here are a few from an article on his website, posted March 28, 2008 and entitled  "A Brief For Whitey"

"First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known."

See, we enslaved them, worked them without pay, bred them like livestock, forced the Christian faith on them and all of that wound up doing them a favor!

"Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream."

Now every one of those programs exist, but not a single one of them was designed for and limited to Blacks.  ALL of them are open to ALL Americans.  In fact, I'm sure that Buchanan knows that somewhere in the neighborhood of 75% of welfare recipients are WHITE!  Why is he making it out to sound like Blacks are a welfare problem when Whites are the ones drawing it for the most part?  Point of fact, boot the *white* asses off Welfare and your taxes will tumble!

"Let him[Barack Obama] go to Altoona and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for “deserving” white kids."

Is he actually trying to make you think that the Ivy League is not giving scholarships to White/Catholic kids because they are giving them ONLY to Black kids?  What's he trying to get whipped up when he writes that?  He knows damn well that EVERY Ivy League currently has White, Catholic scholarship students.  Every one of the schools in the Ivy League.  All of them.....

Do you *really* want to continue thinking Buchanan has no issues with African-Americans slaveboyforyou????

lalbobbilynn -> RE: Don Imus reduce (6/24/2008 11:26:22 AM)

i find this thread to be enlightening on several levels.
i have a nephew and two nieces who are African Americans; their other NINE siblings (White, and Mexican) are CONSTANTLY hassled at school about their Black siblings.
On the flip to that i am moving from Michigan (where i have been for a yr) BACK to NC where my ex (who i was married to for 17yrs) resides with our 13y/o UM (the child asked to stay with his father) because our son's schooling is being compromised by racial issues.
The school my son attends is 92% African American. Because my son is part Fili/Ital, his skin color is not white (like glow in the dark me!), nor is he darker like my ex. Add to this pot every parents personal view on the issue of Mexican Americans, hence my son has been labeled just that, as well as a Puerto Rican (i try to express that area is part of America, to no avail). My son has been assaulted on SIX different occasions. The last time he was walking to lunch, he was tripped from behind, and pushed down a FLIGHT of stairs. My ex will not change schools, nor feels anything can be done with the school board.
INDEED, nothing can be done until lil' ol' bobbilynn strolls in and gets GHETTO FABULOUS on all them there folks!! (OK, will not embody nappy-headed hoe's, nor jiggaboo's, but will run along the lines of accountability, and calling ALL racism what it is ........ iz juzt nasty, y'all!)

i find it jovial how that which is in the media emulates ordinary life, and still we have to pussy-foot around.

i could give to shakes what color You are, as long as You don't turn blue in front of me!

I wish the immaturity could be kept on the playground and out of adult culture.

lalbobbilynn -> RE: Don Imus reduce (6/24/2008 1:05:38 PM)

It can't Owner59.
By ignoring the plight of my African American nephew and nieces, they are being told just that...... ignore unpleasant things.;
Aunt bobbilynn tells them to question it all (doesn't sit to well with my brother and SIL!)!! i tell them Black History Month is a scam to top scams in an attempt to smooth over what White Americans did to Africans. i tell them they should be celebrated EVERYDAY, then i talk about Walcott, Mary Elizabeth Bowser who was a freed slave that worked as a maid in the Confederate White House, affording her to be present for key conversations that she would write down and smuggle to the Union Army; how to do a walk-over; make a killer snowball; the modern day princess of Sierra Leone, Sarah Culberson; how to make a ring out of a peach pit; how Josephine Baker was not only a talented singer but a spy during WWII who wrote secret info in disappearing ink on sheet music; that there are 53 countries in Africa, and all vary in spoken language, and declarations of independence.
i tell my son his father's father came from the islands of the Philippines after hiding in a cave for eighteen months in an attempt to stay clear of the Japanese. That his Papa lied about his age to get in OUR Navy, and i will be GD if he did all that so i could let his grandson's ass get kicked over skin color!

If my ex ignores the plight of our son, chances are my son will evolve into an "Imus." A old man with bad timing, dry wit, & who should have taken up golf instead of the airwaves.
Imus is crippled in his off beat humor as much as Snoop is helping to sell the stereo type of how HE sees folks abound him. Neither benefits the future.

so umm how does Imus know he is getting persecuted for being black when he doesn't know "what color" Pacman is

Level -> RE: Don Imus reduce (6/26/2008 3:32:12 AM)

I'm sure he knew what color he is.

DomAviator -> RE: Don Imus reduce (6/26/2008 4:07:31 AM)

OK, before I say this let me make it clear that Im not an Imus fan. I dont listen to him, he doesnt entertain me, and his gravelly voice is simply annoying to me.... BUT, If he is a racist - SO WHAT? He isnt the only thing on the radio dial. If it was "all Imus all the time" I would say yeah bitch but if you dont like him for whatever reason - simply hit "Seek" again and come to rest on an Imus free station.

I mean really - who cares if he is a racist? There are black radio stations where they play hip hop music and bash white people all day. I dont bitch about them I just tune past. There are christian stations where people thump their bibles and rave about Jeeeeeeesus all day long. I tune past those too. There are even Spanish Stations where I cant understand the lyrics or WTF the DJ's are saying... Hell for all I know they are saying "Kill Kevers" but I dont know, dont care and tune past.

I honestly dont care if Imus comes right out and uses the N word, and spends 4 hours a day telling black jokes. I still wont listen to him, but it would be a nice counterpoint to the crap that goes on elsewhere on the airwaves - like Fat Albert (The reverand Sharpton) ranting about imaginary stories of racism. (Hint, if you pull out a gun in a police precinct and shoot it you are going to be shot - repeatedly! Regardless of what color you are, the cops are not going to draw straws to see who will return fire they will all open up!) or Quanell X ranting about "racist cops shooting a suspect in a routine traffic stop". (HELLO, the black motorist took off all his clothes, told the cop he was going to "fuck his wonderbread ass", and then chased him down the highway median screaming "You my bitch motherfucker!". For anyone who hasnt figured this out on their own, regardless of race, your traffic stops will go much smoother if you do not try to anally rape the nice officer!)  I mean there is plenty of offensive racist stuff on the radio. Here in Houston we had a black disk jockey on one of the urban stations talking to a local rapper about the "spics, wetbacks, beaners, and greasers"...  Why is THAT ok? Im not Hispanic, but a hell of a lot of people in Houston are so why is that OK?

Why is it ok to say cracker, honkey, casper, ghost, wonderbread, whitey, etc?? Why is it ok to call the cops pigs, the man, five -oh, the po po, etc and to play music about shooting them? Why is it ok to call women "bitches and hos" and to have urban format radio stations whose whole format is songs full of those lyrics?

So Imus said something offensive. Tsk Tsk Tsk, get over it. Lets talk about something truly offensive like the lyrics to rap songs played on black stations.  Whats more offensive - Imus's comment or this little gem from "N.W.A":

Without a gun and a badge, what do you got
A sucker in a uniform waiting to get shot
By me, or another nigga
And with a gat it don't matter if he's smaller or bigger

or perhaps Ice Cube's charming little ditty "You Can't Fade Me":

Then I said damn are you sure it's mine
Cause I know you been tossed plenty of times
She said that day no I wasn't whoring
Your ass is mine that's when the sweat started pouring
Cause all I saw was Ice Cube in court
Paying a gang on child support
Then I thought deep about giving up the money
What I need to do is kick the bitch in the tummy
Naw cause then I'd really get faded

Maybe the black community would be better served cleaning its own house instead of worrying about one line comments made my an aging dinosaur who looks like he is on deaths door anyway... Lead by example.

Alumbrado -> RE: Don Imus reduce (6/26/2008 4:24:31 AM)

Interesting to have a record of all the CM posters who are 'outraged' that Imus would dare to criticize racial profiling and DWB, which is exactly what he was doing.

Be kind of hard to maintain the pretense of being liberal after that gaffe.

Part of me thinks that's how it should be handled. Let the public decide.

Yeah, the same public who is every bit as racist if not way more so than Imus is.  They don't have a nationwide radio or television program on which to spout their nonsense.  I think people would be shocked to be able to just randomly hear conversations about the same topics Imus speaks on.  I'd say, overall, some members of the general public are hugely more racist and hateful that he's ever been.  Their comments just don't get broadcast.  Letting the public decide would probably wind up with Imus fired because everyone knows we hate to see the very qualities/behaviors in others that we loathe about ourselves.  People who agree with everything he says and even take it a step further in their own thinking would publicly applaud his removal.  Hypocrites[&o]...................luci

JohnSteed1967 -> RE: Don Imus redux (6/26/2008 12:37:17 PM)

Real simple Imus needs to keep his stupid mouth shut!!

Vendaval -> RE: Don Imus redux (6/26/2008 3:30:30 PM)

I am going with the "both" option.  His comments about the Rutgers basketball team were very offensive.  He claims an attempt at irony with this last controversial broadcast.  That may or may not have been the case.  Either way, the public and the advertisers will have a say on the future of his program.
