Barack Obama's election in 1990 s the first black president of the Harvard Law Review gave him his first moment of national fame, a powerful intellectual credential and a sweet book deal. It was also his first electoral victory, won in part by convincing the conservative minority of law students that he would treat them fairly

The eight dense volumes produced during his time in charge there — 2,083 pages in all — show the Review to have been a decidedly liberal institution, albeit one in transition as its focus on race and gender was contested by liberals and conservatives alike. Under his tenure, the Review published calls to expand the powers of women, African-Americans and the elderly to sue for discrimination.

But Obama, who this March referred to "identity politics" as "an enormous distraction," was not so easily pinned down. He published a searing attack on affirmative action, written by a former Reagan administration official. And when, in an unusual move, he selected a young woman from a non-Ivy League law school to fill one of the Review’s most prestigious slots, she produced an essay focused as much on individual responsibilities as on liberties, criticizing both conservative judges and feminist scholars.

And:

Obama "clearly agreed with me at the time that a shift in constitutional thinking from a rights-based discourse to one that centered [on] responsibility and duties ... would be a good thing," West told Politico. "Partly because of those conversations, I don't find it surprising at all that Sen. Obama's speeches are often marked by calls to spark a sense of responsibility, rather than a sense of grievance."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a good indicator of how he`ll govern as President.
Owner, I don't think the Obama people want to talk about things like this anymore as they don't want their guy to be seen as an..."eliteist."
They even took down that "presidential seal" that someone designed to put on his podium that had the words in latin for "everything is possable" but which they interpreted as "yes we can".
I think he needs to get new "staffers", this bunch doesn't sound too bright.
The problem is, how do you get "Joe Lunchbucket" on the construction site or loading dock to start talking about the "Harvard Law Review" instead of the Pittsburgh Steelers or the N.Y. Yankees?
"Hey Billy! Did you read in the paper about the Harvard Law Review remarks made by Obama on abortion and gun control? It cracked me up! A real fuckin' knee slapper!"
"Oh yeah Mike, why they didn't file at least three friend of the court motions on those babies is beyond me! Do you fuckin' believe that shit?"
The thing is that those two groups of people never meet for martinis after work.
I mean if Obama drinks a Budweiser instead of a glass of wine it's "big news."
And he probably doesn't finish it either. Or, have another one.
("I'll take a single malt scotch!")
I could never understand how the Democrats can "claim" all the Unions anymore as being in support of them, the Teacher's Union perhaps but the Teamsters? No.
They seem to support things like "outsourcing", Nafta, and this "global economy" increased immigration, and "free trade" which are putting "Joe Lunchbucket" on the endangered species list. Obama is in favor of more "outsourcing."
Harvard University is a *private* school with an endowment of what,...$45Billion?
They have the right like all of us to publish their "opinions."
But, there is a *world* of difference between the electrician on a construction site who makes $1,200 a week and people with trust funds that yield $80,000-$100,000 per month and bequest millions of dollars to schools like Harvard in their wills.
The latter are the ones who say; "yes we can."
Wrong Popeye,we had the "guy you want to have a beer with" for the last eight years for president.Didn`t work out to well.
I think folks are ready for the smart,wonky,well educated guy again.
Even Joe Sixpack knows that.
kittinSol -> RE: Obama kept Law Review balanced (6/24/2008 6:56:33 AM)
What's wrong with intellectual elites anyway?
Owner, we did?
I thought that idiot quit drinking?
I mean,....would *you* really want to sit down with that low i.q. YALE graduate and drink a few beers with him? YUCK!!!!
LOL, Owner, ...HARVARD UNIVERSITY is the oldest and *most* ELITE school in all of America!
There's just no getting around that.
P.S. what is "wonky?"
Kittin, nothing's wrong with intellectual elites "anyway."
The thing is if you (are) an intellectual elite you shouldn't be trying to masquerade as something else to hide it.
In this country, you don't need a college degree to become president.
It's not one of the requirements.
I guess he got over that stage based upon his voting record in the Senate.
What past history is more appropriate to predict future behavior; 1990 or 2008?
kittinSol -> RE: Obama kept Law Review balanced (6/24/2008 7:27:43 AM)
Much fear-mongering has been spread about by the Republican party about 'intellectuals' and 'elites' - college degrees are only relevant in that they illustrate something the Reps have been waging a war against: good standards of education for all. Ironically, extreme socialist regimes have used the same tactic to crush their opposition (see: China, Cambodia, the ex Soviet Union).
When the masses are fat and ignorant, sprawled on their couches watching 'American Idol' and 'Fox News', they're not busy plotting against those that are royally screwing them. This kind of politics relies on having many enemies, most of them imagined for the benefit of gathering popular support: the 'intellectual elite' makes the ideal enemy from within.
popeye1250 -> RE: Obama kept Law Review balanced (6/24/2008 7:52:58 AM)
Mercnbeth, correct and they said on the News last night that Obama is "the most" liberal senator.
Owner, that's not going to help people like you though.
Obama doesn't care about people like you and me.
He wants to do "lofty" things!
He wants to send our Troops and money into Africa to places like "Darfur", Somalia and you can bet, "Zimbabwe!"
He wants to "double foreign aid" while people like me want to end it all together.
All that stuff has nothing to do with America!
And he wants to legalise 20-30 million illegals in this country for what reason I just don't know!
Your wages will continue to go down.
He wants to do a lot of things for a lot of people! Too bad Americans aren't among those people.
It just doesn't make sense to a working class guy like me to vote for someone who wants to give my money to foreign countries instead of not taking it from me in the first place! I.E. I don't support the same "charities" that he does.
