cyberdude611 -> Majority of Britons not convinced about Global Warming cause (6/22/2008 7:43:24 PM)

According to a poll, a majority of British people (nearly 60%) do not believe global warming is caused by man. Even more interesting is that 40% of Britons believe that scientists and environmentalists are exaggerating and that the effects will not be as bad as predicted.

Yeah so? Do you know the sorts of absolute bullshit americans believe about science? Luckily science isn't done by polling.

Human action has added a lot of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Changing the atmospheric mix to one higher in greenhouses gases will result in more heat retained in the atmosphere. Those are facts.

They've already proved that it's mostly caused by increased solar activity.
But, if that's true how can the "U.N." run their money scam?

I wonder what *The Guy From Boston* has to say about "Global Warming?"
His scientific commentary is usually spot on!

It doesn't surprise me. If Britain can vote in a lying empty headed meglomaniac like Tony Blair three times, I wouldn't be surprised if 60% believed in fairies.

Actually it was known years ago, before the theory of climate change that the world would warm up towards the end of the century due to increased solar activity. However, if you don't include human activity there is a gap in the math that only adding human activity can explain. Until that gap can be explained by something other than human activity, the nay sayers are not on top of the argument.

Ipsos MORI polled 1,039 adults and found that six out of 10 agreed that 'many scientific experts still question if humans are contributing to climate change'

It strikes me as a somewhat ambiguous question; are respondents being asked what they believe or what they believe the scientists believe?

quote:

... and that four out of 10 'sometimes think climate change might not be as bad as people say'.

I sometimes think England will win the World Cup.  I sometimes think it's only a matter of time before Zoe Saldana turns up in my local.  People sometimes think all kinds of things.

Despite this, three quarters still professed to be concerned about climate change.

Oh.  They buried the lead.  Not.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Majority of Britons not convinced about Global Warming cause (6/23/2008 4:03:01 AM)

This little Brit is cynical about the cause of GW. So I think the 60% should be listened to.

If the UK was moved into the mid Atlantic  and  sunk it would alter world wide emissions of CO2 by about 3 %.
So its obvious to me that all these green taxes that are being proposed are another money making scam.  They have run out of places to put speed cameras so lets find something else to screw the masses

note:The mid atlantic is where all our  tuneless talentless pop singers come from.

A sceptical lot, the British.

atursvcMaam -> RE: Majority of Britons not convinced about Global Warming cause (6/23/2008 5:03:34 AM)

Is the visible, measurable melting of the polar ice caps on Mars, and the second asmospheric storm (viewed by telescope as a second  dark spot in the atmosphere) on Jupiter caused by raised heat in Jupiters atmosphere also caused by human influence?

kittinSol -> RE: Majority of Britons not convinced about Global Warming cause (6/23/2008 5:45:15 AM)

"Despite this, three quarters still professed to be concerned about climate change.
Those most worried were more likely to have a degree, be in social classes A or B, and have a higher income, said Phil Downing, Ipsos MORI's head of environmental research."

More education seems to mean more information, in this case anyway. Surprise, surprise.

Education or indoctrination?

How dare they question the media! How dare they question the great Al Gore (who's own energy consumption went up 10% last year)! We need to load up the BBC with so-called "experts" and educate the public.

I don't think many people in the UK give a shit about Al Gore.

According to the article, a lot of people aren't interested in environmental issues right now, because they're dealing with a general economic meltdown and have other things on their plates: rightly or wrongly, environmental concerns are seen as a luxury. It also looks as though the unbelieving public in question has paid rather a lot of attention to two major sources of global warming denial in the United Kingdom, so your point about the public being manipulated by pro-environmentalists is moot:

quote:

"There is growing concern that an economic depression and rising fuel and food prices are denting public interest in environmental issues. Some environmentalists blame the public's doubts on last year's Channel 4 documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle, and on recent books, including one by Lord Lawson, the former Chancellor, that question the consensus on climate change."

Another reason seems to be that, contrary to your indoctrination theory, the general public is badly informed. Quantity of information doesn't necessarily imply quality: there is a deluge of stuff on the environment,  but:

quote:

"However Professor Bjorn Lomborg, author of The Skeptical Environmentalist, said politicians and campaigners were to blame for over-simplifying the problem by only publicising evidence to support the case. 'Things that we do know - like humans do cause climate change - are being put in doubt,' said Lomborg. 'If you're saying, "We're not going to tell you the whole truth, but we're going to ask you to pay up a lot of money," people are going to be unsure."

It's all about cash, but I think you know this already. To conclude this quote-laddened post, the Dept. for the Environment themselves sound a little embarrassed by the results of the poll:

quote:

"In response to the poll's findings, the Department for the Environment issued a statement: 'The IPCC... concluded the scientific evidence for climate change is clear and it is down to human activities. It is already affecting people's lives - and the impact will be much greater if we don't act now."

Yet, I would hardly call the British government a pro-environmental organisation. Certainly, Greenpeace is one of their arch enemies. All the quotes above are derived from the Guardian article you linked.

Very droll, meat.  But what percentage would have to believe in fairies to elect William Haig, Michael Howard or Ian Duncan Smith (aka "the other one")?

Tory Boy, Dracula and "the Quiet Man" lol.

I wouldn't have voted for any of them. As Peter Cook once commented, if you vote, you encourage them. Only by enough people abstaining or voting for a small party will the big parties get the message people don't like thier politics. Instead people keep voting for the party they dislike the least or like what seems to be happening now in local elections, many underclass that Labour no longer represents, vote BNP, one assumes as a protest because apparently many black people have voted for them too in some areas.

When the British people start getting hit with extreme weather, they will start believing it.

Many Americans did not believe in global warming 3 years ago, ask the people now.
Especially those in Iowa, New Orleans, California,  Oklahoma, Missouri, Chicago,
Indiana, Florida and MS.

Every year more and more people will start believing in "global warming".

Translation, "either believe in global warming or we'll call you dumb."

On a brighter note, last week China "officially" became the number one world polluter.

Actually, that has not been proved.  What has been proved is that the planet has in the past gone through warming and cooling trends, with the current warming trend much more severe due to human influence.

quote:

ORIGINAL: atursvcMaam
Is the visible, measurable melting of the polar ice caps on Mars, and the second atmospheric storm (viewed by telescope as a second  dark spot in the atmosphere) on Jupiter caused by raised heat in Jupiter's atmosphere also caused by human influence?

While it is true that solar activity has increased, with a direct influence on planetary heating, the present solar output does not explain the collapse of two major ice shelves in Antartica, nor does it explain the increased glacial melting in Greenland or any of the glacial areas on the planet.

Ignoring the facts does not change the truth, it just makes it that much harder to create a cohesive solution.

What is extremely humorous about the situation is that switching to alternative forms of power, both in domestic and industrial use actually is so cost effective that it is essentially free.  If every home were to convert to solar with wind backup, the extra electricity put on the grid would allow utility companies to cut back on the amount of fossil fuels burned.

Office buildings could generate enough electricity to cover their consumption needs, and in turn pass the extra power onto the grid, further reducing the need to burn fossil fuels.

Vehicles switching over to the hydrogen based fuel and power cells would eliminate hydrocarbon exhaust and reduce pollution which DIRECTLY affects the health of people in larger cities before it impacts the planet health.

The result is cheap, inexpensive power for everyone.  It just makes sense, save money, clean up the environment and make the place better for future generations.
