I grew up in a paradigm where all humans had the potential for equality, that is my social conditioning.  You may remember and have seen something else, but it is not the world that I know.  I don't understand discrimination based on the color of a person's skin, I don't know religious persecution, I have never known an inferiour human.  That is because of the way I was raised.  I have no other view point from which to judge people around me.

I wouldn't disagree you you on that point, however the issue I was disagreed with was not based on yout own conditioning but based on what you stated. Had you added a coment that this comment was based on your own experiences I would not have made any comment at all. I only ever argue over what is said/written, after all we don't know one another or have any form of shared history so like your comment, I can only discuss information given.

the people that I associate with have been conditioned in the same way.  When I saw "we" it's because I don't know anyone who fits the paradigms you describe.  Furthermore, many of the examples you cited are already history.

hard to say because I would have been raised in a different culture with a different paradigm on humanity

But, there are vast differences among even the people in 'O/our own culture', 'O/our own times'.  We have progressives, reactionaries, iconoclasts, and rebels--and I'm sure such types existed in ancients times, as well.

Some work to 'move beyond' the limits of their genetics, the prevalent cultural, political, religious, and/or social trends of the day.  Not all succeed, and not achieve the same degree of success, but many do try (and the argument can be made that some truly do succeed in their endeavors.)

And, W/we do have imagination, which can allow U/us at least some ability to consider vastly different cultures, societies, and ways of living.

Consider Sir Richard Francis Burton...

Only some are history and recent history at that. Remember much of what we have today is based on history, either the lessons taken from it enabling thinking people to make changes and some of the better points of history are used as models for modern usage. So I'm an old fart and have a long memory as well as knowing a great many people fgrom all over the worls and from all walks of live from the labouror, tradesman to the merchant, business owner/manager both large and small to presidents and royalty. It doesn't make my views better than yours, both are of equal value mine is just different It would be a grave mistake however to assume that all things will by necessity fir into the paradigms which you are comfy with... I dare say I could take you to places in the USA, Canadsa, Australia, Asia, Middle East, UK and Europe where you woulkd be able to observe the paradigms I refered to.. Do I agree with them? Well no I don't mostly, I believe in freedoms for humanity profvided those freedoms do not interupt the freedoms of others who are different and as long as no one's freedome is not causing harm to others..

Well I don't know how I would treat my slaves in Roman times, because as others have said, we are looking at it from a totally different perspective. But I will say that there were few Romans who treated their slaves with any respect or dignity. One Roman who championed slaves' rights was Seneca. He is a fascinating character, here's his Wikipedia article if you're interested:

If I were rich enough to own slaves, I'd simply use them as people use all sorts of service people now- but I'd own them and have to feed them all the time after paying once rather than paying little chunks here and there and not needing to know what happens before or after I'm there.

And since I'd be rich enough, I wouldn't even use them for sex because I could spend my luxury time with people I found fun for that or pay for who I really wanted.

Those who were classified as slaves may have included dominant, submissive, switch and vanilla types. I don't think most were not into submission by choice.

As I do in 2008, I would look for the submissive who is into it because of her personal propensities and erotic desires, but not as a result of her socio-economic-legal status. To think of dominating someone who was not personally, emotionally and psychologically into submission would be like being a prison guard in a B-movie. Not something I aspire to be.

I hate these historical what-if questions.

If I owned slaves in Roman days, I'd treat them the way I learned to treat them, based on my upbringing, social conditioning, and genetic predispositions.  That's no different than how I treat my slave today; the way I treat her, today, is a clear reflection of what I have learned over my 31 years about human relations and social conditioning on top of whatever my genetic predisposition towards emotions in the first place.

In short, I'd treat them in a manner rather consistant with how others treated their slaves, historically.

Stephan

In the end, I agree but I am thinking genetics has nothing to do with this. Contemporary social conditioning is written on the charter of today's law.. Masters are much more constrained just in the simple fact all slavery now is consentual and we must ultimately follow our law.

Tuff to compare absolute property both declared and protected by law with property voluntarily owned and protected by desire. In Rome and Greece, divorce, poly, prostitution and slavery were all recognized and sanctioned in the law, while only divorce remains today.

I could go for some sex slaves like the Rockettes first individually, then collectively.

Umm...I would learn to speak Latin, for one.

Seriously.  Picture pantomiming orders to a group of one thousand.  It's like being a motivational speaker with laryngitis.
