Hmm.  I tend to go with the flow.  If I'm working on something by myself and I'm the resident expert, then yes, trying to tell me what to do is bad.  Conversely, if I'm asked to help with something I know nothing about, I'd seek out the advice of those who know better [we'll assume that authority figures know better...even though that's hardly often the case].  In general, anything requiring creativity is something I prefer to handle myself - though I'm open to brainstorming, I like the final product to be mine.  Anything straightforward, like the payroll I do at work [amongst other things], I'm happy to share the load and delegate; and when I do, if I'm "in charge" I follow the simple rule of, "Be the boss you'd want to have.".

LOL yeah, I tend to pick the jobs I want more often than not.  Even when I didn't have my own business I would only answer to the manager and no one else.  And they inevidibly let me run things my way.
I don't think that it is necessarily a submissive personality trait to want to be managed, while a dominant wants to lead in a work environment.  I think it is more of an anal trait from people who are compulsive about getting things done.

My preference is to be a member of a well-lead team. If it is not well-lead, I will leave or take over.

That is pretty much my experience as well.  My social skills tend to disagree with leadership abilities, but I'm excellent at organizing, inspiring, understanding group dynamics and working out logistics.

Madrabbit- good luck in being self employed - it is certainly more refreshing than being an employee. However - you may be the one in charge - but you are going to be sooo accountable to many more people than you ever were when you were just that humble employee. You are going to have clients, vendors, subcontractors and employees who are looking to you - and when you don't perform as they expect - well I hope you have a thick skin!
To get to your original post - yes there is a great need to be self motivated to be the one who can show you are dominant - not in words or what you say -but in what you actually do - because that is how you are going to be ultimately judged. But., and a big but - I don't think the environment matters a hoot - it is who you are as a person - no matter what the environment - you as  a person will remain true to yourself. Hope that makes sense.

xactly.

Where there is something needs doing,
and one has come to some basic and demonstrated knowing of the how-to,
thereafter (but as well, just generally), micro-managing (back-seat driving)
becomes a serious impediment to the best accomplishment of said task.

...and is as well, seriously annoying.
