I have decided to go with a combination of white (looks silver) and yellow gold because it will match any other jewelry I wear, both gold and silver. I found the perfect ring for Sir. The white gold/yellow gold is about half and half. No problem there. Unfortunately, finding a set for me is becoming a hassle. It seems like all of the reasonably priced sets for women are mostly white gold with only a small amount of yellow gold as an accent. If there is to be more of one color than the other, I would prefer mostly yellow gold with a white gold accent. I did think of one solution. Alot of people create bridal sets by using what's called a ring guard. I'm leaning toward a half carrot white gold marquise solitaire and a yellow gold ring guard with small diamonds (one that goes both above and below the solitaire) would be the perfect solution. I had seen one put together like that at a flea market years ago and loved the effect. Sir liked the idea when I explained it. When I mentioned it to my father, he disagreed. He said it wouldn't match because of the white gold and yellow gold not being on the same ring. I know it's what we think that counts, but at the same time I don't want to be a laughing stock. Is my father right?

Short Answer:No, hes wrong

Long Answer: There are no hard and fast rules for jewelry, with the ring guard you are in effect creating another ring, so it will match, and assuming its done well will look very good

I would suggest talking to a good jeweler. They might suprise you with that they can do....

As to your idea about the ring guard...i think it sounds awesome!! Your dad is probably thinking about the tradition where the two rings are the same.

The ring is going to be on your hand for hopefully the rest of your life.  Does it matter if your father likes it?

We spent the better part of two years off and on looking for our wedding rings.  In the end we went with a nice gold ring with a diamond in the middle and two crosses on his.
We went with my gold engagement ring which looked more like an anniversary ring than anything.  Two total carats with a ring guard.  It was either that or buy a whole new set.  Which was considered.  Yet, the ring had already been on my finger 6 years at that time...it didn't feel right to part with it.

Anyway, one place we considered was Keepsake diamonds.  They are actually quite appealing.  http://star.keepsake.com/whykeepsake/why_quality.aspx
Also...Walmart stocks them.  They are very reasonable for bridal sets.  There are a lot of bridal sets out there that have gold and white gold..or platinum as well as gold.  So I guess there are a lot of laughing stocks out there choosing the same ring as the one you want.

Whatever you do don't go to a place who claims to be a custom jeweler.  We did...and that's how we ended up in our situation of not being able to find a ring.  When we went back for the other half to create it..they told us they couldn't.  Just buy a whole bridal set.

You need to just do exactly what you want, get what you want most.

Myself, almost every piece of jewelry I have is quite unique, either antique or custom. I would no more buy a piece of jewelry at a local jewelry store than I would get a dog or cat at a pet store. Just not my thing.

Most of the sets I have seen come together to look like a single ring http://www.goldenmine.com/ProductImages/Rings/image/R2114.jpg , I am sure you could get a jeweler to mix a set for you (for the right price).  As you already know personal tastes are going to play a big factor in this.

Hell worst case scenario, stop at a jeweler that has the same set in white and yellow gold, and ask to see them together.  At least that way you could make an educated decision.

Good luck,
Thadius

White and yellow gold "mixed" rings sometimes look awesome IMO. As long as they balance out esthetically, they can look outstanding together.

Might want to keep an eye out in the local pawn shops if you haven't found something to suit your tastes yet. I've found some extremely nice antique jewelry at local pawnshops for a lot less then what you can get at the jewelry stores or antique stores.

I have a white gold engagement ring and a separate titanium wedding band.. the two tones look great together, even though they're separate rings. Whatever looks best to the wearer is what you should go with!

Be sure to ask where those diamonds are coming from

If it's hot and humid, perhaps wearing only jewelry would be best...

I'm with cjan on this one!  I had a white gold band and a yellow gold band mix and it looked great and I don't even like the look normally.
