Okay, I am going to play a game today.
{Mz Mia is always playing games}

I am going to be in MD and VA today.
I am going to count how many pay phones that I notice in my travels.

When did pay phones start disappearing?
In the late 1990's I think.

Most of the pay phones I see are in gas stations.

Does anyone here NOT have a cell phone?
What is life like, without a cell phone?

We had to drive to California here two week's ago.  While there I took photo's of a few pay phones.  There were several.
We actually saw about 30 on the trip.  It amazed me as I thought they were all gone already.

They're pretty common in Chicago. They're in all th emass transit stations and most hotdog stands, bars and laundrymats have one as well.

My cell phone is paid for by my job and my contract stipulates certain non office days and times that I have to be available on it. The problem is that a couple of my bosses will try and dump stuff on my if they can so I get calls from the CS company trying to elevate a support issue to me at times when I'm not supposed to be available. So I'm too cheap to go out and get another phone and hate having the phone ring over and over so I leave it at home or turned off a lot of the time.

I don't have a cell phone.
Years ago I had one and I was driving down this mountain road in New Hampshire at about 60 mph and tried to use it and almost ran off the road.
I said, "man,...these things are fucking dangerous!"
I threw it out the window into the woods and haven't had one since.
When all you guys have brain tumors from using them like Ted Kennedy I'll be one of the few left alive.
But, there'll probably be plenty of poor chicks left who couldn't afford them.
Mia, I think the pay phones are right next to the mail boxes.

Ive got a cell phone now, but only got it at christmas, being mostly housebound I didnt need it, and I hate all the extra charges so I just go with a pay as you go one, my useage & fees is about 12.50 a month.

i have a cell, but i never remember to put it in my purse when i leave the house.  Around here, i've noticed the same thing: pay phones seem to have disappeared.  i've used them in the past few years, and a call now costs 35 cents.  Finding both a quarter and a dime is pain in the ass.

The public utilitiy commission should have at least prohibited removal of pay phones from poor neighborhoods.

Just another example of the old saying:

"Hi, we're from the government and we're here to help you'.

LOL.

Popeye? what the hell do you do when you need to call people
when you are out?
I don't use my phone excessively, in fact I rarely use more than half of my minutes.

But even at work, I like to go sit in my car and make "private" phone calls.
You must hardly ever leave the house!

I hate to say it, but the jury is out on frequent cell phone use.

It is not uncommon to see very young um's with their own cell phones.
By the time they are 30, many will have used them all their lives.
I wonder what the result will be?

if I am on a freeway or the beltway late at night, without a cell phone?
Is being without a cell phone worth my life?**

Pay phones are $.50 in my neck of the woods.
They are also very hard to find, the few I normally see are in gas stations.

Worse still superman is fucked, he'll have to change clothes in broad daylight now.

Never put the phone receiver near your ear because some mad homeless person thinks it's a shower head and needs to wash their backside.

Food for thought

i was reading a story not too long ago about how AT&T is going to start phasing out payphones becuase they just aren't profitable anymore.  i haven't used a payphone in ages, i don't have a cell phone either.  i like not being able to be contacted 24/7.

instead, they made it illegeal to have pay phones use dial tone service, in poor neiborhoods. cause, what does some poor kid need to use the phone for, except to page his dealer? (can we say sterotype? oh, lord. god forbid some poor person who does not have a home phone needs to call - the elec company, the doc, the drug store, or any of the other million buisness who now let robots run the phone service for them.)

Raechard? I have left my cell phone at home a few times and been
out and needed a phone.
The last time, I was in a popular mall in D.C.

I had to ask several people if there was a pay phone around {I felt like
asking them to let me use their cell phones.}
Many looked at me, like "Are those still around?".

After asking and looking for about 20 minutes, I found the pay phones in a dark, dim corner.
Two dirty dingy pay phones in the corner that cost $.50
After wiping the receiver off, and putting .50 in, and holding the thing away
from my mouth, it didn't even work!
I used the next phone, and I finally was able to make the call.

ugh

Parking meters in Westminster no longer take coins. It's a cashless society in which people either book parking spaces by text messaging or they pay the machine with a credit card. The upside is that money doesn't have to be collected and therefore the security risk is minimised. Phone companies have often wanted to get away from a coinage systems due to vandalism and have created phone cards etc. to do so. BT no longer makes any money from payphones and if someone needs to call 211 they’d better hope they aren’t over shadowed by say a tall building.

Mia, why would I need to talk to people on the phone when I'm out?
There's plenty of people to talk to out and about! In the Malls, gas stations, supermarkets etc. That's how I meet people!
As for driving around late at night in a bad area just carry a gun.
How many times have you been frisked by the Cops lately?
Once they found out who you were and that you're on the "up and up" they don't care. They just don't want criminals having guns.
Here in the South if you break down you just wait for the cops to drive by, or more likely a huge pick up truck with 3 or 4 rednecks and they tow you if they can't fix your car and you buy them a case of beer and call it even.
When I first moved here I was taking a walk in the rain and two different cars stopped and asked if I needed a ride. lol
*Is being without a gun worth your life?*
A cell phone's not going to help you if some guy decides he'd like to have a little
"chat" with you, "911" puts you on "hold" these days.
If you break down on the highway just put your hood up and stand outside on the inward of your car, plenty of people have phones and will call someone.
Besides, I have a phone in my condo here if I want to talk with someone.
I may use it 4 or 5 times a month.
I was in a drug store one time cashing out and looked over to see this guy talking to himself.
"I said to the clerk; " Look at that poor guy, he must be from that group home up the street."
Turns out he had like an ear ring thing on and was talking on a "phone" of sorts.
But, would you want to go out in public like that and have people looking at you like you were a retard as you were talking into thin air?
Hello! Twilight Zone!
I get along very well without a phone.
I just make believe it's like the "old days" and talk to people.
But, it's tough to communicate with someone who's on a phone.
I'll make another post about how inefficient people with phones are later. True story!

My cellphone is my only phone, so yes I have one.
A payphone costs .50 now if you can find any. Most public areas have them, stadiums, mass transit and the like.

Popeye, I am sitting here laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes.
LMAO
You are tooooooooooo damn funny.
You could make it on "Comedy Central"!

I don't know where to start with your post.
I love the part about being on the "up" and "up".
Then waiting for the rednecks to help me out, for a case of beer was good also.
I think my favorite part is the guy you thought that was talking to himself in the store.
Many people wear the ear pieces for the cell phone in my area.

When I get older and I want to talk to myself when I am out Popeye, I will
buy the ear piece and put it on and go for it.
Popeye, you should buy one also, at least you won't have to worry about someone
putting you away for talking to yourself.

I look forward to reading that post when you start it.
I totally agree, that people are to "connected" these days.
I don't like being out in public, and being "forced" to listen to someone
else's conversations, especially the sordid ones.
It can be shocking, what people will say on the phone, "right in your face".
Especially some of the teens when I am on the subway.
Popeye? I have heard some foul sh*t!

I had a cell phone, but it is no longer functioning, I use it simply as a clock, MP3 player and camera. I rarely "need" to make a call, and so far have had little trouble finding a pay phone, most convenience stores around here have them, but this is an older, less affluent neighbourhood, so that may have something to do with it. They are 50 cents a call here (a little pricey if you ask me).
