I've been calling all of my friends in the IC/CR area to make sure they are alright. I know we have a few CM friends up there who have been awfully quiet. Of course, my Mother-in-law said her internet is out for at least the next week. Maybe thats the explanation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those fighting these floods.

I hear they are higher than the 93 floods...and it is all heading downstream to St. Louis...damn global warming

The Midwest is sure taking a lot of weather hits the last few years... something is happening.

Everyone is telling me that this stuff is going to crest 10 to 15 feet higher than in 93.

There is a bright side. The mother-in-law couldn't get to her RV so she had to postpone her visit to us.

Thanks kittensol and kdsub;

It's much worse than '93. Our previous flood stage record was 20 ft. It's now at 33. It should crest tonight. (We will earnestly wish that we won't receive the rain we are forecast to receive this weekend.)

I'm grateful I only have a mess of a basement. We've lost much as a city.

On the other hand, it's been extraordinary to have volunteers turned away from sandbagging and other relief efforts because so many have turned out. Iowans are cool folks.

It must be nerve wracking, besides suffering the losses y'all have already, to be waiting for the rivers to crest and keeping a nervous eye on the forecast for more rain.

Um, on a selfish note... does this mean the sweet corn crop is kablooey ?

subtee I didn't know you were directly affected ...I wish there were a way to help ... I will pray for all of you.

It was the same this year around St. Louis... people pulling together to set up sandbags..people are really mostly good... we talk about the bad ones constantly here... good to hear of the good ones now and then

From what the local news says...yes. Even here in Nebraska...(and we haven't been hit nearly as hard as Iowa) some corn never made it into the fields yet because it is too wet. Where it has...it has been too rainy and not enough sun. So the corn is about 4-5 inches high right now. If we get an early hard winter like this last one...I'm thinking there may not be a harvest.
Farmers markets aren't even open yet..no vegetables have been able to grow for most people.

Yesterday was indeed nerve-wracking, watching (when power and cable were on) the city's downtown fill with water, imagining the libraries' books, the main theater pavillion's historic edifice and interiors, the museums, historic hotels, brand new restaurants, all of them up to their high, high roofs with water and only imagining what is being ruined inside; watching folks get rescued by boat because they didn't want to leave their pets at home alone (the rescuers took the pets too); crazily being amazed and grateful that we've only lost 18 people to weather over the last 2 weeks, realizing how much more horrific it could have been. And all day long...it stormed and rained and rained and stormed.

Things were trying pretty hard to be depressing, but I was thinking that if I'm worthy of the blessings of earth and atmosphere, I'm worthy of the challenges too.

We'll see about the corn. I'll bet you could still get a good cob.

Great, good thoughts, kdsub and Seeks, thank you; I wish I would hear from them!! Anyone heard from LaT or Lauren or Bull or any of them? I've gotten no response, but, as the Mother-in-law-less (tee hee) Irishknight suggested, it could be power/Internet issues.

Hello everyone!

No need to worry about me or my little farmette. I am very fortunate in that I actually live quite a distance away from any major flooding. My own personal biggest issue has been getting back and forth to work. Nothing really, not in the big picture.

On the other hand I work in Iowa City only a block and a half away from the Iowa River, near downtown. I've been sandbagging like a sore madwoman. Very sore. This morning it took me 45 minutes longer to get to work because of all the closed bridges and streets.

Both of my kids (both adults) own homes in flooded parts of Cedar Rapids. My son is not so badly affected, just water in the basement. My daughter, who is 8 months pregnant, on the other hand has lost everything. We got her out of Cedar Rapids just before they closed the interstate between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City today. She was staying with friends that had no water or power, and they smoked which she hates as much as her mother. Someone brought her to Iowa City and I brought her home with me. I probably will not be able to get to work for a few days, until a bridge opens up across the river in Iowa City, but I am not going to complain too loudly. We have no idea how long it will be before my son can get back and start cleaning out his house. My daughter's may be a complete and total loss. She may be with us for awhile. There might be a new baby on the farm for awhile, before this is all said and done!

We have many extended family members, friends and aquaintances that are affected.

Fortunately we live in a part of the world where people are generous with all of their resources. I love Iowa and Iowans.
I am just glad everyone in the family is safe and healthy.
