"I just thought they were going to escort me out," Jonathan Orr told The Herald of Rock Hill, about 70 miles north of Columbia. "I had no idea they were going to put handcuffs on me and take me to jail."

they have had the same rule for how many years now? and the kids are shocked that there might be real consequences?

at my old high school you could get arrested for soo much less than that, and we all knew it :P

Status: offline 		My UM is an alumni of Florida State University (a "Seminole').  She received a great education but Man, graduation was an ordeal.
 
They use this huge indoor football field-sized auditorium, and they graduate E/everone from the PhD's to the BS'ers in the same ceremony.
 
First, P/pl Y/you don't know and don't care to know about get up and make speeches that go on and on about nothing in particular. (Apparently every degree program gets to have its own speaker.)
 
After that, the President takes the podium and asks members of the audience to rise:  grandparents, mothers, fathers, and legacies.  This kills another hour of Y/your life Y/you'll never get back.
 
Finally T/they get around to handing out diplomas.  My UM has a last name that starts with one of the first letters in the alphabet, so i only had to wait -- o, say -- 30 minutes once they began with the undergrads for her to get her diploma.
 
The whole thing was just awful, right down to the there's-nowhere-to-park, and i cried through it all.
 
Watching my UM graduate was like the day she was born.  i knew it was coming, but i wasn't prepared for how deeply i felt the joy.

Status: offline 		when my oldest graduated from 8th grade last year, you better believe i had a large cheering section for her. we were extremely loud (like everyone else) in that auditorium.  when she graduates from high school, i'll be cheering as loud as i can.

Status: offline 		Graduation ceremonies are not sporting events.  It is a formal affair, and it's supposed to be dignified.  It's not a place for loud shouting, air horns, or home made banners.  It's absolutely disrespectful to the other graduates and the others in attendance to act like that.  The time for applause is after all the graduates have walked across.  It amazes me how selfish people are now.

Status: offline 		I agree. I've seen families cheering their grad to the point where the next one graduating can't be heard.
If it is known that the behaviour is unwanted I just don't understand why people would be that rude and disrespectful during the ceremony.
Then again this is also the same world where a ringing cell phone can be heard at a funeral.

Status: offline 		i can see both sides.  graduation is a big thing.   the mom in me has a hard time keeping my mouth shut when my kids are making me "overflow with pride"  part of me wants to scream and yell and let them know that i'm damned proud of them and i want everyone else to know as well.  on the other hand, i can see how that would be annoying to other people.  personally i love to hear cheering sections for kids that have done something wonderful.

Status: offline 		I totally get that christine but the thing is, that it was supposed to be a screaming-free ceremony. That is the bit that annoys me and strikes me as selfish.
Some graduations are fine with hollering and stamping of the feet, others request a different atmosphere. IMO a person should follow the preferred style. I would be mortified to be graduating at a solemn ceremony and have people suddenly stand up and scream for me. Ugh.
At a fun loud ceremony? Sure thing!

Status: offline 		yup, why i said i can see both sides.  of course i'd be quiet at funeral type graduation, i wouldn't be that rude and annoying, although  i'd probably be snoring and drooling on myself in my bleacher seat but that's another story.

Status: offline 		When I graduated, it was supposed to be a more solemn ceremony, when my name was called, there was no screaming or shouting... there was applause after everybody came up of course.... I never thought for a second that my family wasnt proud of me, I knew they were, and if there had been any sub-concious doubt it was certainly removed at the after party at the Olive Garden

so, heres a comprimise... want to show your progeny how proud you are? Pasta is great for that :)

Status: offline 		It's mostly rude because if you are loudly screaming for your kid, no one hears the name of the next few kids.  Everyone is walking the stage and deserves the same credit and recognition.  To take away from anothers is pretty selfish.

Status: offline 		We held our ceremony on our football field so that we could have as many guests as we wanted and so the PA system could overcome all of the shouting.  Had we moved it into the auditorium, we would have had to hold a quiet ceremony with only three guests per graduate.  That was why, when they tried to move the ceremony inside to avoid the storm that was coming, we all began chanting, "Hell no.  We won't go." We looked like a bunch of drowned rats when we were done but we got the ceremony we wanted.

Ya, when i graduated law school, students were given only 4 tickets each for guests.
 
You better believe a mass bargaining session immediately broke out, LOL.
 
i dunno why they insisted on a limit: the damned thing was held outside in 90 degree heat.
 
Personally i don't have any strong opinions about applause at graduations.  i have finished attending them for the time being -- probably won't attend another till the g'babies (if ever there are any) start graduating from pre-school, lol.
 
BTW, has S/someone actually heard a cell phone ring during a funeral service?  That's truely bizarre.
