This afternoon we got our ranch's first newborn.  One of our mares, who wasn't supposed to have been bred at all, just had a beautiful cremelo filly.  I've been as nervous as a new daddy.  When we looked and saw those glass eyes of hers looking back at us it was awesome.  If this girl was any lighter, she'd be an albino.

We named her Phantasia.

We have no idea who the sire was so we're screwed on that deal.

I'm with GT, pics please. I would so love to have been there to see the birth. I cry when I see a birth, whether it's a horse, a human or an elephant. Seeing something being born is the most beautiful thing to see in the world. You are so lucky.

Thanks.  We won't have any pics to post until tomorrow.  The local (WalMart) photo shop Closed 30 minutes before the event.  We snapped a bunch of them though.  These will be the dirty yucky newborn filly pics but she's still adorable.

When I was a little girl, my best friend was the local farmer's daughter (I'm talking deepest rural France here) and I was able to witness the birthing of a baby calf... it was epic, the farmer had to tie rope around its ankle and pull because the cow kept on walking forwards...it was quite an education (and my dad's an obstetrician, so it's not like there was much mystery entertained in the family): those mammals are HUGE. Still, as soon as it was born it stood on its legs and swayed around a bit and went straight for the boob... life is amazing.

I've never actually got to be there for the birth before so this was even more amazing to me.  I've always looked for my horses to be old enough to break and ride.  The breeding program was something we decided to do when we decided to move down here. 
What was really cool was to see my son's eyes as he watched his horse giving birth.  You could see the magic reflected in his eyes.

I'll try to get a photo up tomorrow.  All we had was a disposable camera because our digi is still packed somewhere from our last move.  That being the case, we have to wait on wally world to develop the pics.

We've raised a few Quarterhorse foals and absolutely loved the experience.[:)]

Congrats. I've always loved foals.

If you've never raised a foal you will want to decide what training to do when. A weanling can be halter broken and trained to accept grooming and being loaded onto a trailer. Trust me that it will make things easier later.

Now for my dumb question of the day!
I know dogs can be bred for particular coloring, but does that hold true for equines? There is a horse down the road from me, the most astonishing color. A soft velvety gray that looks like the color of silver mink as the wind blows the fur up. A soft but shimmering gray that looks unreal, surreal, magical. So that made me wonder if color can be bred in horses?

Thanks for the advice.  Since getting other people's little ones ready id part of my business, the training schedule is not that much of an issue.  I've just never had the chance to do it with one of my own.  That's the really exciting part.  Its amazing being there for the foal's first attempts ro stand, helping her find Mommy when she needs to feed for the first time and watching a brand new life begin.  Time for me to go check on her.  i stayed up really late making sure the coyotes weren't hanging around.

Had to stop when I saw your post. Horses are bred for color every day.  Getting it to breed true is a long and difficult process but it can be done.
