I'll admit I get goosebumps when the AB theme plays... gates open... and the Clydesdales march out pulling the wagon..Or when the Cards hit a home run and the Eagle flaps it's wings ..Damn I like home...lol

Mercnbeth...You should have stayed a little longer...Check THIS out. I saw an interview with Gussie Bush where he credited a good part of the taste of AB products to the water in the City... His tasters are paid a LOT of money...yes all over the world... to match that taste....I'm not being a AB snob either...but I do think it the best of the mass produced beers.

Butch, I had some good times there. I remember my first summer experiencing temperatures that were in the 100's for an entire week, dipping to a 'mild' 90's at night. It is the only place I ever burned my hands on a steering wheel and needed to start the car and let it run to get the A/C going before driving.

I was there for the big flood of 1993(?) when the river came up so fast they couldn't get the flags down from the area in front of the Jefferson Mall and for the longest time the three flags rose up from the water. I have pictures of the river lapping under railway tracks showing a clearance of 19'!

One of my friends was the CFO of the treatment plants that told me about that well kept secret about the sewer treatment plants. I have no doubt the AB takes precautions every place they exist regarding the water supply.

I too would hope Grant's Farm survives. Again, I don't think the new owners will tear apart the foundation of something they paid so high a price.

My favorite Gussie Bush story was when the baseball players started to make big money, and he said he would sell the team if he had to pay a ball player, I think it was Ozzie Smith going for the big bucks, more than he made. Needless to say, soon thereafter it was up for sale.

I love the imagery but can't stand the namesake beer.  I'll agree that it is better than most of the mass produced stuff.  I remember drinking Milwaukee's beast in tha Navy because it was so cheap.  I'd kill my taste buds with a bit of the hard stuff and go to town.

Do any of you remember a cheap malt liquor called "Crazy Horse?"   That stuff was another thing I would use to get started.  There was a profile of an indian on the side and I swear he would talk to you when you drank too much.

Don't remember that one IK, but in my miss spent youth I do remember 'Iron City'. You got 3 quarts for a buck! Cheaper than water! Come to think of it, I don't think anyone actually sold water back then. I swear there is was named that because they used the run off from a steel plant.

If you had 2 bucks you could 'upgrade' for a 6 pack of 16 oz Carling Black Label, I think you got change! Do they still make that?

My home town 'beer' was something called 'Champale' - Trenton's finest and sponcer of the renouned, but short lived, Champale sponsored pro softball team starring the great Joe Pepitone. However, it must have been for export only because I never drank it and never saw any of my croud try it. We lived too close to the plant and saw what was floating on the water source - the Deleware river.

The water source is irrelevant. Before it's put in the vats, it's been filtered through polishers, charcoal beds, reverse osmosis, demineralizers (ion exchange), and tested for purity (fastest way is with a conductivity meter)(pure water is non-conductive). I once had a night gig 30 years ago or so running the QC and water treatment for a Pepsi bottler in Norcross, GA. Also had a gig with an engineering firm doing a joint study with the EPA and Am. Textiles Institute looking at carpet mill wastewater. Also had a ten yer gig at Shell where I did some analytical chemistry which required pure water. I know a little about the subject.

I won't dispute that you probably know a great deal about water quality and finishing due to your job experiences. However, when it comes to making beer, water quality as well as water characteristics are extremely important to taste of the final product. Any brewmaster worth his salt will agree.
