At an intimate fund raising dinner held Thursday evening at a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain mused: "Looking back on it now, with the balance and perspective granted by the passage of time, I can honestly say that the torture to which I was subjected as a prisoner of war was really not all that bad. In fact, what I then perceived as sadistic, inhuman, barbarity was nothing more than a legitimate result of the North Vietnamese government's willingness, indeed, its duty to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of its citizens in a time of war."

When questioned, in a brief question-and-answer session after his speech, about his earlier, strongly stated objections to torture, the senator reflected: "I believe I was, at the time, caught up in that whole, 'it's not my fault, blame someone else, poor me poor me' mentality so prevalent in the post-Viet Nam-war era." He continued, "It really wasn't such a big deal and, obviously, I was able to just 'walk it off'. I am sure I deserved harsh treatment at the time, otherwise they probably wouldn't have done it."

Senator McCain received a standing ovation at the conclusion of his comments.

So, in order to justify his latest flipflopping on the subject, he is arguing that his torturers were justified.

It's amazing.

Well...yeah...unless the story is a total fabrication. If it is, I suspect it has some kind of basis in reality.

He's pulling your leg, kitten. He made that up, McCain would never have said that, or anything like it.

He's just funnin' ya, 'cause he knows you're from France...

Yeah yeah yeah... I'm actually from England as well, but people keep on forgetting that troublesome little detail, preferring to focus on the frog bit. Oil well.

PS: Oh! And the story was made up? Well, I never...!

I really would like to know if that is true or not. Something solid would be nice.

At times the veracity of a story matters less than the allegory contained within it. The meaning's more important than whether it's based in facts. Perhaps that's what this is about?

i hope he didn't really say that, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did.  to say that he probably deserved the torture or they wouldn't have done it?  has he gone mad?  is someone contributing to his wallet?  is someone holding his family hostage?   i cant' even begin to understand it.

most likely some sort of dementia.

Sometime when you're bored.....stroll down to your friendly, neighborhood Blockbuster, and rent a copy of Steven King's '' Dream Catcher '' -- Then study and pay close attention to the character portrayed by Morgan Freeman.

There are many similarities....

I have googled this. Now, my sons tell me that my 'googling skills' suck - but then, they come from a generation in which their mother is forced to run out and buy Mario Teaches Typing when they are declared to be 'behind grade level in typing skill in Kindergarten', and i come from a generation which barely had anything called 'computer skills', much less, 'googling skills'. Still, i can find nothing. If it is not a fabrication, a link would be helpful.

christine, you need some form of dementia to be President. To sell our country down the tubes after having all these beautiful plans during the election.

I would not kowtow to them and would be assassinated in short order.

There is no meaning in what is factually untrue. Reality is fact and only fact.

Yea, we wouldn't want facts to get in the way of a good slam.

However, let's say it's true and he did say that....

Having never been captured and tortured, I can't say how I would feel about the event years later. I have had bad things happen and looking back at them, they weren't as bad, as I thought they were at the time. Nothing compared to being tortured, but bad enough. He is the one who has to deal with what happened to him, not me, but to hate him for it?

Instead of focusing on how bad McCain is, how about telling us some positive things about Obama. I keep hearing people asking this and no one seems to ever answer.

Are you and celticlord that limited that you cannot see there is meaning beyond that which can be found in facts? Never thought a song, or a novel, or a painting had meaning? A joke, a word, a legend? The Bible? And what makes those things, if it's not stories, allegories and metaphores?

Good god  .

Good god .

Songs, poems, novels, paintings, and even jokes have meanings. Those meanings will be found in the underlying facts.

Reality is only fact. There is no dimension of reality that is not fact.

And yes, kittin, that is the order of things.
