LONDON (Reuters) - Disinfectant wipes routinely used in hospitals may actually spread drug-resistant bacteria rather than kill the dangerous infections, British researchers said on Tuesday.

While the wipes killed some bacteria, a study of two hospitals showed they did not get them all and could transfer the so-called superbugs to other surfaces, Gareth Williams, a microbiologist at Cardiff University, said.

Time to start using bacteriophages.

Cleve Cartmill already mentioned using phages against bacterial infection in his 1942 sf story "Some day we'll find you".

There used to be a bacteriophage bank in the Soviet Union. (I do not know what happened to it.)

a couple of years ago, we got a memo at a managers meeting (im a cafeteria manager at a school) that showed the use of anti-bacterial soaps has done more harm than good.  good old ivory soap and warm water and washing for the proper amount of time(sing twinkle twinkle or abc song 2 times), and making sure to wash all areas of the hands is the best defense.

it was stated that the anti-bacterial soaps kill the good bacteria, the ones that actually assist us in fighting the really bad ones.  they changed our soaps to a foaming, non bacterial soap right after this.

i dont have the memo here to refer to, but i did stop buying anti-bacterial anything after that.  i know our govt is screwed up sometimes, but i decided id believe the cdc on this one.

LOL; my brother and his whole immediate family subscribe to the belief that anti-bacterial wipes, soap and so forth for the consumer are a big conspiracy by the medical establishment to weaken O/our immune systems and make U/us spend more and more on medical care.  Really...they actually believe this is a conspiracy in fact.

Cyberdude, i'm not really surprised by the outcome of the study.  Hospital-acquired infections have been on the rise and have been growing more and more virelent; the personal injury lawyers here now actively advertise for such cases.

You'd think S/someone would have had the sense to test hospital anti-bacterial wipes to see whether they were up to snuff.  Gheesh.

Spelling lesson : There are two accepted spellings for conspiracy;

c-o-o-p-e-r-a-t-i-o-n

or

p-a-r-t-n-e-r-s-h-i-p

You might want to add this to your spell check database.
