Email vs Posting - 6/3/2008 3:52:33 PM

For some odd reason i've gotten some email, very polite and articulate, in response to something i posted here.  Why is that?  Are some P/pl too shy to expressT/themselves on the boards?

Does this happen to A/anyone else?  (i'm not talking about the occassional 'hi, how're ya doing' from a friend.)

Maybe because they'd prefer to keep it private?
Or countless other reasons.

If it's the thread I'm thinking it may be, probably because they wanted to keep it private.

Or it could be they didn't want to hijack a thread. Why don't you just ask them?

Definitely they wanted to keep it private.

As for why....ask them. If they're not shy, they'll tell you!

Maybe they'll see this thread and post T/their answers, lol.  And so far as i could tell, no one was emailing about anything controversial.

That is sorta my question though; why would A/anyone want to keep a response private when participating in a message board?  Isn't the whole point to solicit the opinions of O/others?

speaking from the perspective of a reformed(almost) lurker sometimes when one is starting to become involved in the community it is easier to connect with an individual. The group dynamic can be a scary experience for the more introverted. Someone posts something that strikes home and rather risk the public, they seek the writer. Or not.

Why not ask them? That makes a lot more sense than asking a bunch of random people. The idea that they *might* notice this thread seems pretty ridiculous when you could just go straight to the horses mouth. When I had questions on Master Fire's needle play style, I didn't post a thread about it. I just asked her. If I want to know why someone c-mailed me, I just ask them. Posting threads that they probably won't notice wouldn't get me answer I want - why they wanted to keep their message private.

However, to attempt to provide an answer that I really can't provide since I'm not them...
I've gotten notes on the other sides regarding things I've posted. Usually personal comments, best wishes when I've mentioned my engagement, further insights, etc. I find it touching that someone noticed. Other times people have read a thread and asked me about something that, for various reasons, they didn't want to share on the boards. I was honored that they felt they could ask me and I did my best to answer their question.

Plus - people don't always return to threads to see comments. If you want a specific person's reaction/thoughts or just have a message you want to get to them, the best route is still to go directly to them.

Well if I had complimented someone via CMail and they started a thread asking why someone would do that? It is highly unlikely I would post my reason in the thread because I would feel stupid. If I take something private I typically want it to stay private and would not feel comfortable having it forced out in a forum. I don't understand why this is an issue for you actually or why you just don't ask the person who wrote you. Sometimes people want to show empathy over a post, or feel a connection and want to let you know you aren't alone. The reasons are too many to count.I've CMailed someone because I've been in a similiar situation but didn't feel the need to let everyone know about it.

I generally stay away from the boards unless I have something new and substantial to add.  If someone makes an interesting comment, it makes me read their profile, then perhaps message them.  Not all conversations should be had in a crowded bar ;) Oh for the days of speakeasies...

Does this happen to A/anyone else?

I know personally, I have made some good friends from those who have messaged me in response to my postings.
A lot of times, when I think my suggestion/comment will derail the thread and hs the potential to start unnecessary argument OFF the point, I will usually send it as a private message. Especially if it is an unpopular opinion.
Also, if it is something baby related that I do with Angel, I'll often keep that private becasue many times our kink is not something everyone wants to read about.
Last, when I am offering personal assistance (mentoring, help rewriting...) I do so in private so that the OP knows I am offering it to them and not to the thread in general.

a while back i posted a joke, and the explosion it caused, really surprised me, then a sub posted a bit of a tirade, and another explosion, before that someone posted a joke about an irishman - and it wasn't that funny - and yep another explosion ... some of the stuff written in the responses was almost vitriolic.  I've been on here almost 6 months now and realise it happens from time to time - as in all families.  From a newbie's (and i'm only a half-step up from that) perspective the ... um .. forthright nature of some of the ... ah ... regulars was (and at times still is) a little intimidating.

However, i'd fight to the death you right to be forthright!  Keep it going ...

so ... that might be why some prefer to email directly rather than on the threads ...

Over the years I've had a lot of fans in e-mail.  Most are afraid to express themselves here for fear of retribution.

At least that's what I've been told over the years.
