The other night, my wife and I had to stop because there was a pair of puppies in the middle of the road.  We picked them up and took them to one house after another in the area to see if they belonged to anyone.  Apparently, these little girls just got ditched in the road by some shithead who didn't want them anymore.

They were friendly, smart, and completely adorable.  Our first intention after failing to find their home was to take them to the animal shelter.  They never made it.  We now have two more dogs to help watch the place.

My question is, what kind of lowlife abandons an animal in the middle of nowhere to starve to death?  I can be cold and cruel at times but sentencing a creature to suffer over a long time like that is beyond cruelty.  If you have to put a creature down, you do it quick and with as little pain as possible.  Kind of the way cowboys would shoot a horse with a broken leg.

My brother once found a dog who was half starved to death tied to a tree in the middle of a state forest. He and his girlfriend were camped there for 5 days and no one ever came. They fed it all week and ended up taking it home. They had that dog about 14 years after that.

It's a foolish and terrible thing to do, because the ending many times isn't so happy as the one in your story, but they probably hope a good samaritan like yourself [:)] will come along and rescue them.  Naturally, there are way better ways to find good samaritans....

why can't people just take them to a shelter?????

I live in a pretty rural area.  The possibilty of them making it to where they were by themselves is pretty slim.  Even so, we are putting up some flyers around the area.

You and your wife are doing the right thing for these little pups.
What age do you estimate them to be? 
How large are they likely to grow? 
Do you have names picked out yet?

Many of beth's collection of pets came from the same source when she lived in rural Santa Barbara County. Fine folk from the city would drop off their no longer cute and/or cuddly dogs, cats, whatever along the road and hope they'd fend for themselves or find a home. If they were lucky they found their way to beth's family ranch. Most weren't so lucky.

Many of the other residents would shoot them upon discovery. It was a merciful action considering the alternative was starvation or becoming coyote or mountain lion kibble.

Shelters ask questions, sometimes require money; a deserted lonely road at night - doesn't.

Hey Irish, unfortunately this is a common thing in Arkansas.  I see it all the time.  The county Humane Society here can't take anymore animals because they are at capacity constantly.  We also have a Guardian Angels cat rescue group here, and they are constantly at capacity.  I give money to both when I have it.  Some people are just scumbags; I don't get it either.  We still haven't managed to make animal cruelty a felony in this state yet, and I don't understand that at all.

 I live in a rural area too. Puppies, kittens, old washing machines, refrigerators, sofas & full bags of garbage are routinely dumped out here as if 'the country' is nothing more than some sort of dumping ground. Every spring there are new puppies or kittens to be found and it makes me soooo angry! People please spay and neuter your pet!

I realize its common, but its never sat well with me.  I have never understood how you can do that.

As for some of the other questions, they seem to be about 10 weeks old or so.  We think that they are pit bull mixes just from their looks.  One is very pittish in the face while her sister has a more schnauzer look to her.  They have only been with us three days yet they know their names already.  Call "Trista" or "Rhiannon" and the right pup will answer to it.  I think we made the right choice by not taking them to the shelter.

I have never understood people dumping or mistreating critters either.  They should be punished in the same way that they mistreated the animals.
 
Sounds like your family has two cute and adorable additions that will keep you all on your toes with training and teething for the next year or so.

They may not have been abandoned. There are a lot of feral dogs out there and these puppies could have been littered by a stray. Good on you for adopting them.

some folks just do not care....my cousin lives towards the end of a dirt road out in the country......she is now up to 7 dogs that have just shown up on her doorstep or in her yard....but yanno you will get some great great rewards for saving them puppies.....thanks for doing it!

i'm not trying to be negative here or anything, but maybe this was the best they could do....If i even had the ability to count how many pets of mine were killed by my dad, it would sadden the entire free world.

I've been around feral dogs.  In fact, I've had to put down feral dogs to keep them away from my livestock.  These pups weren't feral.
We actually arrived on the scene very shortly after the dust cleared.  The pups had been kept decently fed but that was it.  Dropping them at a shelter would have been humane. We happen to have one over in Pocahontas that would have gladly taken them.
I have also had a number of pets put down by my father as a child.  He was never cruel and he hated doing it as much as I hated it.  He NEVER put an animal in a postion to suffer.  Every year after hunting season, we would end up nursing some lost hunting dog until the owner could come claim him.  Occassionally, one would show up that would try to harm our chickens, rabbits, pigs or other animals and it would get put down.  It was always done with as little pain as possible to the creature. 
It took me years to fully understand that.

That upsets me too. But, like people are stupid and do it.
Because they're too lazy to go to a shelter for them.

My older brother did that to his cat, because she peed on the floor.
And like the cat was gone for like three weeks after that.
Then she showed up on their front door one day.
I was so bloody pissed that they did that.
Sure the cat did something bad, but... doing that.. >>
