A bill may pass British Parliament soon allowing the creation of “cybrids”—or human-animal hybrid embryos. Scientists say a lack of available human eggs makes cybrids necessary for critical stem-cell research that may provide cures and treatments for diseases such as Parkinson’s, Cystic Fibrosis, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s. All cybrids will be destroyed after fourteen days, so no hybrid animals would ever be formed. Most expect this bill to pass. Is it a good thing?

It definitely raises some bioethical questions. I doubt it would lead to The Island of Dr. Moreau. But I am always skeptical of claims like, "so no hybrid animals would ever be formed." I don't put it past someone to try and do exactly that. Scientists are just like any other group of people. You have some that are completely ethical, and some that aren't. We may see the day where some scientist thinks it's a good idea to make a human-animal hybrid embryo and allow it to develop completely just to see what happens.

Just think…we may soon be cured of cancer from this research... even if we do glow green in the dark, electrocute those we touch, and grow sharks teeth.

It'd be nice if they would make use of the frozen embryos in the fertility bank instead of throwing them out in the trash. Every life has a purpose. Some of us are here for decades, others are here for a blip in time. If I could have been used to advance cures while I was a few cells, I'd have been honored. After all, we do return eventually. (i.e. reincarnation) Not everything has to be born to be a blessing to fullill their purpose. IMHO
