MissSepphora1 -> Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/29/2008 6:40:05 PM)

First they tell us the price of gas is up due to high demand, then they tell us it's up because we're using LESS??

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/gas_prices

Prices remained volatile, though, buffeted about by threats against Nigerian oil facilities, worries about falling gasoline demand in the U.S. and a strengthening U.S. dollar.

I'm glad you noticed

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/29/2008 6:48:40 PM)

less is more...you can save up to 20% with abc.

Alumbrado -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/29/2008 6:50:36 PM)

Time to dust off the old J.C. Whitney catalog, and improve my gas mileage into negative useage again...[:D]

Leatherist -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/29/2008 6:51:28 PM)

In pother words, the speculators are seeing the happy times coming to an end,and are going to try for one last money grab before governments step in and regulate the obscene profiteering to a close.

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/29/2008 7:02:37 PM)

Yes.  So why don't they just admit such, instead of telling us to use less.
Why doesn't the media fess up and say, it doesn't matter what you do, the prices are going up.

Alumbrado -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/29/2008 7:13:14 PM)

For the same reason that every holiday season the media reports 'concerns over slumping sales' and 'fears of a dismal turnout', and come Feb. the notice that holiday sales were actually up from previous years gets buried in the back of the business section?

It is what they do.

interesting article on oil production and profits compared to other industries..it's long but lots of info:

Mighty fine site. Just bookmarked for my Politics file. I looked at the ANWR thing on the left side of the page. As I have been saying for years, Anwr is trivial. Try to convince a rightie with facts, though, yuk yuk yuk, [8D].

Use the refrigerated type of Kraut. Empty the package into a colander, rise well, put in pan with a bit of water and bring to a simmer for a little while. This helps get some more of the sodium out.

Trivial? You think a whole month's worth of gas is trivial? If we get these damned tree-huggers out of the way we could fuck up even more ecosystems and probably score enough shit to get us through the whole American summer vacation season!

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/30/2008 12:30:36 PM)

It depends on who you speak to about ANWR.  Some sites I've read have said there is more oil in ANWR than in Saudi.  Others, mostly liberal, say it's very little and wouldn't help.
Depends on who or what you believe.

BS is relative.......depends which side of the fence you are on at any given time.....now if your actually sitting on the fence you don't really give a sh*t either way.......if you sit too long on the fence you might find yourself in the emergency room....but then it could be argued that if your on opposite sides of the fence you may also find yourself in the emergency room for differing reasons.....but then perhaps what I've just said is complete BS!

Conclusion: BS is relative![:D]

No I don't believe that and see it as another distraction from the reality of incompetent leadership catering to special interests and political correctness.

Why else would a competent county not having built a nuclear power plant in over 25 years?

Why else would existing know, and accessible reserves of oil and natural gas be put 'off-limits' to drilling?

We play by rules put in place by corrupt officials designed to put us in the position we are in today; to the amusement of the rest of world.

You want cheap oil and lower cost of electricity? All you have to do is allow nuclear power plants to be built. Consider that in France, when the Civaux nuclear power plant comes on line sometime in the next 12 months, France will have 56 working nuclear plants, generating 76% of her electricity. Imagine if even 25% of the US power came from the same source reducing proportionally the need to use oil, natural gas, and the carbon generating coal?

Instead of asking our candidates about their 'spiritual leaders' perhaps we can ask their position on this issue? How about a mandate to cut through the environmental and fear bullshit and built 100 plants in the US in next 10 years? Just raising the issue could see the per barrel price of oil drop $20.

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Do we all believe the BS we're being fed? (5/30/2008 2:28:09 PM)

I'm not complaining about power sources, as WV has more than enough coal to provide for that.
France has 56 power plants?  And the world is having 2 cows over Iran getting 1??

Makes you wonder...

Here's something to consider:
quote:

"Our message of 'Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less' is clearly resonating with hard-working Americans who are struggling to pay for rising gas prices," said Dave Ryan, American Solutions Executive Director. "The voices of more than 100,000 Americans are demanding that Congress offer real solutions to our energy challenges, and that begins with drilling for oil now."

Why else would a competent county not having built a nuclear power plant in over 50 years?

Are you talking about the US?  The last nuke plant ordered in the US was 1973.

There is still the storage of high-level waste issue.  And you need improvements over the plants of the '70s (more loosely coupled, better user interface, and preferably the type that won't run away or overheat when the water circulation stops.  Battelle's done some interesting work in this regard.)

There are a lot of complexities in the funding of the plants, funding of research regarding plant operation and waste disposal, and decommissioning; these should be examined before going "Yep, these guys did it so why can't we?"  It took a lot of government committment and funding, and still does, to keep the system going.  See this link.

Not exactly a free-market system.

Yeah, my apologies, my fingers were typing from the emotional side of the brain without engaging the quantitative side. I saw it and corrected it, but your post beat the edit.

Your issues aside, we wouldn't be building new plants under a 1970's blueprint or with 1970's technology.

Your points are well taken. It would take a completely different mind set to get one built. I doubt its possible since the majority of the US population is much more likely to believe a horror story, fairy tail, or worst case scenario than consider pragmatic statistics or what's observable all around them. (See 'global warming')

Would you prefer examining the issues for another 50, whoops 25 years, and play catch up then?

Actually new reactors are going to be built at the South Texas Project in Bay City. (Happy Happy Joy Joy - looks like its time for me to start buying pickup trucks and engine driven welders - there will be some HUGE contracts on that meaning years of cash for any contractor who can strike an arc.)  http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/092507dnnatnuclear.106e63da3.html

IMO Nuclear energy is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Waste storage is solved - Yucca Mountain. Of course if the environmentalists dont like that since we now own Iraq and Afghanistan we could always spread it over there.... Just disperse it enough that they couldnt extract the fissile materials for bomb making. (No im not kidding... same thing with all our environmental problems over here. Ship it there!) Dispersing the waste across their country works by me and we already did it with DU so whats a few thousand more rad..
