Except the punishing taxes hurt the poor exclusively. The Ted Kennedys of this world will never be picked up from the hospital by scooter whereas the poor will just have to suffer along the best they can.

Won't they.

But carbon credits would never fix that either. Perhaps the best we can manage is to have government forces make everyone equally miserable through punishing taxes... anyone who dares to succeed could be taxed hundreds of times as much.

Perhaps everything might then be finally fair.

Funny you should say that because in the news today was the comparative price in Europe before and after tax. One stark fact is that before tax we are among the cheapest if not the cheapest in Europe but after tax we are one of the most expensive.

I'm all for green taxes though because people never do the right thing without central interference. I can always change what I drive and so should others, haulers should be given tax breaks though. 58% take that Mr 4x4, yeah

Do you think we should treat a finite resource as if there was an endless supply of it? *shrug*

For myself, I have changed my driving habits quite a bit when it comes to conserving gasoline.  I would do my part if there was mass transit in my area but I don't live in a big city. I have to commute 30-35 miles from my home in order to work.  However, I think most of the Americans would not be happy with this arrangement, either.  President Bush once said "Americans are addicted to oil".  Well, I would like to see these politicians drive hybrid cars and if I could afford it, I would not mind having a hybrid if that is what it takes save on gasoline.
