Yep - it looked OK in the films; lots of people sleeping all day, and a fiesta every night.

Coincidentally, this is the aspiration of most Brits for their fortnight vacations in the Med. As long as they dont have to eat "any of that foreign muck" and the supply of chips and Watneys beer is plentiful.

"The grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence." (old folk truisim)

Funny thing about that article: the author started off strong, discussing the how and why some people decided to leave Germany as the fascists rose to power, and how they themselves had drawn up a checklist... but then didn't discuss what was actually ON that checklist... Maybe where the bar is set is a personal thing... But I have a couple of suggestions...

#1) is the government no longer following it's own laws? (Or has it resorted to "signing statements, or "executive wartime powers" to gut the Constitution?)

#2) If arrested, can you expect a fair trial? (Or are there special prisons where people go, and are held without representation, or charge, for an indeterminate period of time? Are there "black prisons" no one knows about?)

#3) are you still free to protest and demand change peacefully?(Or are protests routinely ignored, and the protesters themselves shuffled off to "free speech zones?")

#4) Are those in power considered above the law? (Or, say, if they were to accidentally shoot someone... in the face... would nothing happen to them, not even a fine, and the victim of their accident apologizes for "getting in the way?")

Hmmmm. Sounds like Bipolarber is a terrorist sympathiser to me - full income and tax audit to check on funds going to support terrorist groups, full monitoring of all mail, email, internet usage and phonecalls is called for. And a check on who he associates with - aha! Dangerous violent sexual offenders!

Of course, a donation to charities working overseas can be interpreted as supporting terrorist groups, since such charities feed the offspring, family and friends of terrorists. And if that fails, well, some of his tax goes towards the Palestinian Authority, so that will suffice.

We shall monitor his communications, looking for keywords (confidential, but basically 25% of all words in English). And if that fails, we'll just make it up.

Say farewell to Bipolarber - you will not see him in any court or be able to write him in any prison. Well, not any court or prison you know about.

Silence is safety, citizens.

LadyEllen,

LOL! (Yeah, well, there ARE nights I wonder if the GOP Bible thumpers might not be coming for me... I get involved in state polititcs rather often [everyone needs a hobby] so they know me. I supported the reversal of anti-sodomy laws here in Arkansas. Now I'm volunteering time for the effort to allow gays and unmarried couples to be foster parents. So now, even the straights can enjoy oral and anal, without fear of being arrested for it.) Yeah, I make Xristians, Bushies and other fascists mad. The great thing about doing so? It's FUN!

His career is definitely transferable and he could continue even doing alot of his same work from here...as much of the type of work does not require being physically onsite, such as being an advisor or reading manuscripts  and mentally  I think he would go nuts if he retired totally  [:D] so it is not like he was planning to come here to be supported by the goverment/taxpayers

Exactly my thoughts.

Unlike our neighbors to the south, I don't plan to flee MY country "for a better life" because things get bad. Americans didn't do that during the great depression and we aren't going to do it now. We don't run from our problems and bring them to another country. We get pissed off and we fix them.

Too bad not every country's citizens have that mentality.

The "people" brought this one on themselves, I'm afraid. If they did their peaceful protest truly peacefully, they wouldn't snarl traffic during rush hour because of their own ego. They wouldn't need corralling to a "free speech zone" to protest. But since they can't stay out of traffic and they have no ability to show any kind of caer for anyone other than themselves or their 'cause,' now they have to be wrangled.

Irishknight -> RE: It's Time To Flee The Country (5/26/2008 2:26:08 PM)

I have to agree with Smith.  Getting between me and where I need to go is not peaceful protesting/  It's tempting my foot to slip off the brake and test my truck's bumper.  I believe the free speech zones were initiated to stop exactly what my sarcastic side stated.
Eventually, someone would get tired of people standing/laying in front of his/her vehicle and make street pizza out of them.  I was vastly amused when a number were removed from the front of a man's vehicle with a liberal application of pepper spray.  He just wanted to exercise his freedom to earn money to feed his children.
People in this country forget that just because you have freedom of speech, I still have freedom to ignore you and tend to my own business.  Nobody HAS to listen to your free speech.

Precisely what do you think brought Englishmen to these shores in the 1600s?

I have an idea.  Everyone whowants to flee should start going now so that the roads aren't crowded.  I'll hang here in my birth country and maybe drive down with some 5 dollar a gallon gas to have a beer with DA and we'll go out and get us some illegal Mexican hookers.  Anyone need me to pick them up on the way so we can carpool in my gas guzzler?

Death, or a fate worse than death? That merits reflexion [:D] .

I don't mind the hookers: it's their clients I'm not too fond of [:D] .

Religious persecution from England. I stated that we will not flee OUR country. England isn't our country. Nice try though.

I read a story recently on CNN where they interviewed a guy in Mexico whose son had come here "seeking a better life" and the story quoted the guy as saying it was no better here than there now because of the rising cost of everything. Perhaps the gas and everything else was a calculated effort to do, 'naturally' what the politicians have been afraid to do for years. If there's no "better life" to be had, perhaps those coming in illegally, will stop. Why take the risk if the place you're trying to sneak in has nothing more to offer you than where you came from?

SirMGD -> RE: It's Time To Flee The Country (5/26/2008 4:16:23 PM)

They're gonna move the border north soon anyway it looks like, so when people ask me where I live now, I just tell 'em Fort Worth, Mexico.

Don't know of a single precise cause, but the Hispanics were probably still migrating after the Inquisition.[;)]

Cool. I'll go to Munich and bop around on the 50 euro/month Gruenkart for the trains, buses, trams, and subway, drink some of those fine local beers, ogle the bayerische Mädchen and live in a city with some actual culture. Tschüß!

Look in the news. It *is* coming to an end. Better kick back and enjoy it. This kinda party only happens once in a lifetime.
