Inquiring minds want to know, Now that gas is $4.00 +/- a gallon aren't you so happy with that SUV, Humvee, Navigor etc and etc.

Don't you wish now that you'd spent that money on a fuel efficent car?

Hell no. Who wants to tow a trailer with a tracker? Wait ... a tracker couldn't even move my trailer with the horses in it. I'll stick with my gas guzzling trucks until they make something fuel efficient with real power.

No. I bought the car I did for specific reasons - to drive my elderly parents and inlaws around, as I was assisting them a great deal. Also because I was planning to have children with my (ex) husband. The car served most of its purpose. Now that I no longer have that need, I would much rather have a different car, but my divorce cost me too much money and a new car is not in my budget currently.

Is the point of your post an "I told you so?" It might not be, but it sounds that way.

I am actually quite pleased, I need one for heavy hauling and to haul the horses-----there are now finally some decent prices and some sweet deals.

Not at all. My Outlander is getting around 27 mpg, I live 10 miles from work, and I just keep my foot off the gas pedal. $50 worth of gas is lasting me 2 weeks, unless I have a trip somewhere. Sure, I'd like it to be better, but I need the cargo space.

Nope... can't fit 2 greyhounds, an eskie and a chinese crested in a tiny car ...I also run a small business and travel to events and need to haul my merchandise....when I go to these events my aerostar extended van will have the rear seat removed and will be loaded from floor to roof... Being it is all wheel drive and I often have to drive before or during periods when plows are not yet on the road . it allows me to get through deeper snow and drifts that a tiny car would belly out on......what good is a tiny fuel effficient car if it won't serve the purposes I need a vehicle for????

I have a Dodge Grand Caravan (3 monsters and I work with several animal rescues doing transports) and it's been the best vehicle I've had. In fact, this is Dodge Grand Caravan #3. First one was gracefully retired with 210,000 miles on it, second one died on me (bastard!) with only 176,000 miles on it, and #3 just rolled over 171,000 miles. Ummmmm, did I mention that I tend to log about 15,000 to 20,000 miles a year on my vehicles? I have no regrets on my choice of vehicle - it's perfect for me and my family. And the cats, and the kittens, and the dogs, and the ferrets, and the hedgehog, and the rabbit...... And anyone else too!

(Why yes, I do run the local zoo!)

my crv is great on gas, but work just moved quite far away and i'm spending 40 bucks a week just to get to work and back home...

i'm happy with the 50-60 MPG i'm getting with my various motorcycles... Not so happy with the 16MPG i'm getting in my Dakota, but i suspect i'd be even less happy trying to carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood on the bike, so...

Frankly, i was happier when gas was $0.89/gallon... weren't you? Or was there a certain smugness missing from your life that you just couldn't bear?

I'm happy with my 47 MPG car thanks although I pay far more than you people for fuel due to a more realistic tax disincentive.

Heh.....I could simultaneously purchase 30-40 Navigators and absorb their inefficient nature at any given time, yet I've never come anywhere near close to owning/wanting one, or for that matter, any SUV. I do have a full-size, half-ton Silverado......but it gets driven less than 200 miles a year.

Both fuel efficient vehicles and self-imposed austerity have always been good for The Ranger

Well guys, I mentioned before that I have a diesel with a "greasecar" conversion to it. Some on the list have said that, once the price gets high enough, others will be compeating for the waste oil. It seems that $5.00 a gallon for diesel is the tipping point. I went out on Saturday to collect the oil from my usual spots, and two of the three had already been emptied. If this keeps up, I may end up selling it and start looking for a Tracker, or an older Samurai.

Still, it was nice while it lasted... for almost three years now. A good run.

My Dodge Dakota isn't to bad on mpg, considering that I keep it specifically for use hauling the boat to and from the lake while it's packed to the gills with camping and fishing gear. (My Caravan doens't have a tow package, or I'd only have one vehical.) My Dodge Grand Caravan is used for everything from hauling around my dad and his wheelchair, to hauling groceries, to hauling 3 Large dogs (black lab mixes) and a cat to and from vet appointments, to hauling merchandise to and from shows. Much like Maya and Rainfire - a smaller vehical simply wouldn't be practical. I'd end up spending as much in gas for Extra Trips as I currently spend to get something done in a Single trip now, and that doesn't begin to take into consideration the Time I save doing things in one trip that would otherwise take 2 to 5 trips in a significantly smaller (and hense more fuel efficient) vehical.

I have an old Blazer that has a 17 gallon tank and yes, it eats gas from time to time. But hey, I needed something bigger to haul my kids and all our crap around so you gotta do what you gotta do. Of course I'd still like the b-slap every executive of every gas company in the world for gas being so high.

I have a '97 Nissan pickup. I love that little truck. I have never had any problems with it. It gets about 25-28 miles to the gallon on average. It doesn't get as good of gas mileage as a compact car with the same engine, because it's low geared for towing. Now when I buy another car, I really want a Jeep. I have thought about the gas prices, but I really don't like compact cars. I had a cavalier when I was younger, and I hated that car. I called it a "crapalier." It got great gas mileage, but there was always something wrong with it and the parts for it were expensive as hell.

crapalier? I like that. I used to work for a company in Little Rock that strictly used Cavs for their company vehicles. There was always at least one in the shop, if not two. Of course, they were kind of fun because they had first generation cavalier airbags and you could kick the front bumper and make them go off. Sometimes shift change could get a bit ..... tricky.

I wish I hadn't given my nephew my 2000 Geo Tracker 4x4. Jeez I miss that lil thing, it was green... soft top... optional 4 wheel drive and got fantastic mileage. He blew the motor within 6 months.

My 2 wheel drive ranger got fantastic mileage. I then got a 4wd version that got worse mileage than my present F-150 with the big V-8. Mind you, I still want a diesel for going on long trips. They still tend to get better mileage than their gas burning counterparts and diesel burns cleaner.

Yep Irish, I bought a brand new one in 1993 when I graduated from high school. It was one of the first models with an airbag. If you had to come to a quick stop, the ABS lights would come on and stay on. You had to go get it reset at the dealer, which was fine when it was under warranty. After the warranty expired they charged you a ridiculous amount to do it. The check engine lights came on all the time for no reason. You had to get that reset too. I had to get a taillight replaced once because some nimrod broke it in a parking lot without leaving a note. It cost almost 200 bucks. The airbags never went off in mine, but I heard stories from people.
