There is a house up the road from me that has their yard filled with signs.Signs warning of the impending black helmet and black helicopter take-over.A multitude of white crosses surrounding those and the biggest sign of them all painted in bright blood red: They are coming and coming soon. Prepare yourself and your loved ones for the end, the end is being brought to us by the black helmets!Beware! [:D]  I keep hoping some kid will sneak out one night and make a crop circle in the yard.

I hadn't heard about Predators being in LE test.  The sheriff here was playing with much smaller scale.

And now I'm curious.  Do UAV controllers get a logbook that is worth anything?

I really dont know if you can log UAV time. I know in the Air National Guard, the guys flying them are "pilots"... In the HPD test it is the helicopter pilots from the aviation unit who fly them, but I dont know if the time is loggable. Thats part of the FAA test program to come up with rules, qualifications etc. But rememeber here in the Houston Class Bravo / ESP the I-10 corridor is some of the busiest airpspace in the world.... We have IAH (Bush Intgernational) HOU (Hobby Airport) KEFD (Ellington field - a major freight opertation as well as NASA flight ops, the 147th TANG, and several DOZEN general aviation fields with corporate jets, the PHI choppers that supply and do the crew transfers to the rigs etc... Personally, I dont like knowing those are up there cause they are camoflauged, unlit, slow, and I can see them... Part of the reason I file IFR for everything - so the air traffic controllers can provide separation cause I cant see and avoid them and I hope the UAV pilot isnt out taking a piss when it comes into my windshield)

That's a bit different from Predator, DA.  I think this is one of those things that is pretty much inevitable, especially for rural traffic control.  I don't see them working in the urban areas until we have some very good back-up systems for when things go wrong.

Its not the Predator per say, ie with the hellfire missles hanging off it but its pretty damn close. (The one in Houston is used in Iraq by the Navy and USMC.) In any event, it can be anywhere from the surface to 19,500 feet (meaning it could even be tooling around in Class A airspace which starts at 18,000. Its got a 10 foot wingspan and does close to 90 mph and you cant see the little fucker cause it is camoflaged and unlit. From my standpoint as a pilot - and keep in mind Houston and Miami are some pretty congested airspace - thats one hell of a piece of FOD (foreign object debris) to ingest into a jet engine... (Continental, Southwest, and ExpressJet went fucking crazy when the NOTAM on this thing came out.)  Ive seen what a stationary 3/8" drive 3" extenstion bar can do to a jet engine - $200,000 damage and blades through the hangar roof. Jets aside, I dont exactly want to catch this thing in my teeth while flying in a Cessna 172 either...

TheHeretic -> RE: Black Helicopter (5/24/2008 9:09:01 AM)

No worries, DA, I know what FOD is.  From the standpoint of avoiding collisions, I think it's just a matter of the technology getting ahead of the regulations.  Purely a matter of restricting certain corridors and altitudes.

Now this one is just plain nifty.

lronitulstahp -> RE: Black Helicopter (5/24/2008 9:10:37 AM)

Not so nifty...don't think i have any shoes or purse that match[;)]....

That actually is pretty nifty, and it is SWEET to see the Navy buying something from Grumman again! [:D] However, as great of an idea as it is I dont see it getting past a technology demonstration stage. Naval Aviation is just too rooted in tradition to see them go to unmanned strike aircraft. Personally, I think its a great idea and would be excellent for a lot of high risk missions where we currently use cruise missles. (It would be much more cost effective to use regular bombs and have this thing come back.)  However, in all candor, I doubt the powers that be in Naval Aviation will like it very much and I cant see any admiral with gold wings on his chest going for it. If McCain takes office, my guess would be this thing is dead...

As for your comment about simply restricting it to certain corridors and altitudes - easier said than done. The Houston class B airspace runs from above conroe to the north to past baytown in the east to just shy of Texas City on the south and the whole thing is enclosed in class E starting at 700 AGL (Where it overlaps with Galveston's class D) I mean with IAH to the North and Hobby to the south and the joint Civil / Military / NASA Ellington field, all having high speed jet traffic on multiple departures and approaches, as well as the "below the floor of the class B" operations from LaPorte, Pearland, Baytown, Hookes, Houston Southwest, Westheimer, Houston Executive, Lone Star Executive, and a dozen private airports (Like bay Electric, LaserAir, Volke, etc) I dont see how in the hell they can squeeze one of these in where it has a prayer of actually viewing the city.... In rural areas, traffic patrol over the interstate etc yeah - but HPD doesnt do that DPS does. I mean no shit, air traffic in houston can be so bad that the controller will say "Follow Continental and I will be like "Which one?" or "Traffic at 3 o'clock" and I will ask "The two T-38's, the 737, the Citation or the  Cessna?" For shits and giggles sometime look at:

http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KHOU

and click on the map... Thats what the controller sees on their screen... Sometimes its pretty intense....

TheHeretic -> RE: Black Helicopter (5/24/2008 12:42:40 PM)

Not a job I would care for, thanks.

I doubt you could get a really accurate track of what is in the air around me.  I'm along the "paradise corridor" for aviation geeks.  China Lake, Mojave, Plant 42, and Mount Olympus (aka Edwards AFB).  Wander out into R-2508, and they'll just blow your ass out of the sky.  It's even written into some of my mortgage/escrow papers that the Air Force reserves the right to break every window in my house if they need to.

I don't think it would really be all that hard to put up a high altitude UAV over a busy urban environment.  What we might need to do is figure out where it will be out of the way first, and build it to that purpose.  I doubt we would ever be looking at unmanned vehicles pulling the duty of a tactical police helicopter.

Another possibility would be like what the Sheriff was playing with here.  Very small, low altitude recon.  Tiny things, restricted to 300 feet from the ground.  What's the worst it could do in a crash?  Hell, I have a remote control helicopter I use to get the cobwebs off the cathedral ceiling in my living room.   Haven't lost a lamp, yet.

Ok, I don't know if it's actually black or not, but.... 23

Before any one jumps to silly conclusions... ( opps prob. too late)

We live near a *major* and I mean *Major* military base.

Hell Central Command  and Special Opps is down here at MacDill AFB. http://www.macdill.af.mil/  , http://www.macdill.af.mil/units/

We fly lots of interesting things out of there.. usualy to the bombing range in Avon Park. http://www.outintheboonies.com/Avon_Park_AFR/

They do have some pretty cool trails out there for Civies... and you can camp with your horse.. as long as it isnt huntin' season.

OMG.. you are joking right?

I would have to take my 2 way walkie talkies.. and my spot lights.. and swarm thier house some night... Just to scare the fuck out of them. *chuckles*

Wearing black ops gear of course. LOL

I am just evil that way...

I think I remember most of my 10 codes. *snickers*

hehehe yup.. but as mentioned.. the idea of being shot doesnt thrill me quite as much anymore as it used to.

Plus I do not get paid to be in harms way anymore.

but it would be fun to see thier faces. LOL

I love your LKH quote.. she is one of the few authors I read fiction from.. her and Carey's Kushiel books.
