I prefer myself Nod32, kasperksy or Avira. Besides that I use Superantispyware. ( I try a lott of things...nothing is 100%)

Thanks Justme. I do have the Vista. I am getting used to it. It had a memory malfunction when I first got it & had to be sent back, but is working fine now, without any problems. I love the graphics. I am not a gamer, so I don't need a super duper bells & whistles computer. This was an inexpensive system much better than what I had. I just want as much extra memory as I can get. I am a little intimidated about changing the memory in here though, since it originally had a memory problem from the factory installation. I have rebuilt quite a few systems without any problem, so I think it will be worth it to just add it myself. By the way, to the op, I have Open Office & love it. I can save my documents as a Microsoft word file, so I can use open them up that way & use them at work, which doesn't have Open Office. They are a little out of it when it comes to great programs that are inexpensive. Best of all, Open Office is completely free.

Thanks for the advice on this stuff. Someone mentioned the iMac. My wife just bought one and while it cost twice what my acer did, it is looking to be well worth it. Her old Mac laptop cost about 5 times what this comp did but it still keeps up fairly well after 4 years. I've never had a pc that kept up that well without significant changes after so long. Care to shed any light on that guys? It has been making me really curious lately.

That is a little the problem with windows. There is so many stuff to install for windows..and people do that...it ruins the OS. But if MAC gets more popular. You will see the same problems comming.

No more swapping to harddisks and so on. Look at the website of your motherboard manufactorer. They have lists with advised memeory. you also can use the Google online office suite. Then you have always access to all (when you have internet access of course)

I do disagree with you here, Apple owns all of the rights to everything, so no matter how popular it gets I cant see a large influx of new things for it

IF you are in Europe..at least where I live and the surrounding countries..go for pc.

I've got an HP dv9650us laptop. It came with Vista. My old desktop has XP. It took a little getting used to, but I'm fine with Vista. Mind you...I use My computer for only the basics. My only complaint is that Vista seems to take forever to boot up.

...i'm running vista home basic on a new Dell machine with 2 gigs memory and an AMD dual core. i can honestly report no major problems at all, other than having to replace my old much loved printer. It is memory intensive, but then so was XP considered such when it came out. The machine has one of those nvidia OEM graphics cards (8300) and runs ET:QW (alongside teamspeak) and Oblivion perfectly well. Seems to me that too many people are changeophobes.

basically, yes my gaming laptop, and one of my desktops have Vista (Ultimate onn the laptop, home premium/Ubuntu on the desktop) and the only problem Ive had so far turned out to be a bad router

I love Vista, I got a Big Hoss Dell XPS system, and the only thing I can say bad about it is that It assumes that your an idiot and that you need handholding. Which I honestly Understand, MS (Mircosoft) wants to get their product into as many hands as they can, so they figure if they make their product as user friendly as they can. that more people will want to use it. My problem is I am a Professiona PC tech and don't need hand holding!

I have been running Vista almost since it's release. On my desktop I have Ultimate running under 32 bit and not one days problem since the install. I had been running Xp on an AMD Athalon 64 x2 (939 chip) on a Gigabyte board, and I did have to swap out to an Asus 939 Board since Gigabyte wasn't upgrading the drivers for the board to Vista compats, but other than that..not even a crash or blue screen. It even knows where all it's .dlls are something Xp loved to lose track of to make you reinstall it. My new laptop is a Gateway P-6860 FX and running vista Home Premium. Both of my machines have 4 gigs on board and perform beautifully. I do a lot of work in Adobe, Flash, Poser and other graphic intensive memory hogs and don't run into a problem. If you have questions I can help. poenkitten (real tired of the Mac commercials. They literally turned me away from buying a Mac notebook. If I wanted to listen to political name calling I would rerun the Bush/Kerry commercials)

good thing aboput vista (for graphic programs also) is that it spreads the load over multi core cpu's better. I love it with my Intel core2quad , 4 gig and a nvidia 8800gt (yes I spoiled myself). I can open so many things at the same time. Run a game and have bittorrent running..while burning dvd's and such. (ok ok no one does that normally I admit) Strange thing is. I am playing a lott of BF2 online and works of course fine on XP. Vista 32 had problems with it..and Vista 64 (uses 32bit emulation) works better then both. Right now I am running Xp with sp3 again, because I was curious about its speed. yeah it is great Vista can stop and restart parts of it OS. No need to restart the whole pc.

Another quick question. When I run dvds, my video driver will sometimes just quit responding and it shuts down the movie. Do I need to upgrade media player, just the video driver or what? It isn't a major problem but it can get annoying. I am finding all sorts of little problems that I blame on having a gimped version of vista. Most have been fixed except my gaming problem and my dvd problem.
