There are certain 'textspeak' things I don't mind.. thx, lol and it's variations (I see them as text emoticons) and things in that vein.  It's the 2, r, u, etc that drive me batshit. I don't see it as a language, I see it as an indication of laziness. in the days when cell text messaging was new, I believe it cost per character, so in that case it would make sense to abbreviate as much as possible (but most of the kids who use this txtspk now weren't even born then...). Now, when it's cheap to text (I think it's .05 p/ msg AFTER I've used my allotted freebies, which I have yet to do) there's no excuse for it, other than laziness..

Just my NSHO *grin*

I agree, some of it doesn't bother me...I like how you term them "text emoticons." I wonder, though, if I don't mind because I've become acclimated to it...brain is infiltrated...becoming a pod person!! Need...antidote......need..............verbiage

Miss Subtee, why do you not sashay yourself on over here and sit down beside me on the verandah and we will have a nice glass of ice-cold Coca Cola whilst we pass the time of day, hollering at the young uns that are tromping through the flowers?

Hey!  I speak l33t!  Srsly!  Learned it from the doll boards, which  are populated with the young folks who are all up on the 4chan.

But I do ask people to spell out their words when writing to me.  [:)]

To be a li'l serious here's my [image]http://www.collarchat.com/upfiles/smiley/2cents.gif[/image]. Abbreviations, smilies, emoticons, textspeak are, imo, like language itself, in a sense, i.e., tools for communication. And like any tool, there are appropriate and inappropriate ways to use them. For example, I don't use them , certainly, when introducing myself on the internet, or when trying to convey something that I think is important. If I am goofing with someone in a post or otherwise, I may, No biggie to me.

Literature , poetry and story telling, I hope, will always be with us. Certain things cannot be conveyed through abbreviations of any kind. The beauty of language and it's appreciation are a wonderful thing and can be an art form. However, just as finger painting or playing with Playdough can be fun, imo, so can  goofing with language and woids.

GimpinDenial -> RE: u tlkN 2 me? (5/21/2008 9:20:40 AM)

I agree with the majority of the posts...
In the beginning, short hand typing (i.e. wtf, cya l8r, lol, afk, bbl....ect) was quick and easy, especially when all we had was AOL (prodigy was not well used even though it was YEARS ahead of aol) and we had to jump from one instant message (im) box to another...
But now, however, touch typing (as I have heard it called) has become an abomination of an unruly beast that has been taken up by the masses.

Do not get me wrong, I don't mind the usual, easy to understand abbreviations... but the example subtee has provided is a great setting for abbreviation abuse.

I think we should start our own AAA (Abreviation Abuse Awareness) and try to reform some of the lost....

That's just my opinion... <shrugs>

P.S.
(I might get razzed, or flamed...but...eh..oh well...)
After reading over some responses I noticed a few hypocrisies....
Not using abreviations, then using a few and even one repeatedly ....
or hating it when someone uses incorrect grammar then misspells a word...
Don't mind me...I am just being an ass.....

4chan is also a home of anonym, not? They sure talk L33t.

It is. 'Home' of the Rick Roll, anonym, and other random dumbass shit that is, when you get down to it, stupidly hilarious.

Now I feel the urge to shower. Excuse me.

lol how come you know it  :P

Because I'm a 'net addict. *Cough*andalsoa4channer*coughcough*

You two lovelies sit right there and I'll keep my finger on the "9" of my dialpad so I can call for emergency assistance when they cross from the sidewalk to the grassline.

~feelin' all cool and crotchedy and stuff~ (Old age does have it's perks.)
