I have a ton of them. I really wasnt offered a different choice. It was explained to me that silver is more durable then resin. making resin to be used for cosmetic looks of the teeth.

any opinions, experiences on this?  I think a country in EU has banned these all together.

??

ut oh-  the public comment ended in 2006. hmm. [sorry]

I had all my silver fillings removed and replaced.  It did make a difference in my MS symptoms.

I had all my mercury fillings removed in the last few years, and replaced with porcelain.  The mercury fillings were so old they were no longer settled perfectly in my teeth, and cracks had occurred beneath them.  I could only have two fillings removed at a time, to prevent mercury poisening from occurring.  I'm really happy with them.

Sigh ...Unless we get universal dental care in this country I am stuck with them. Dentists  priced themselves out of my market long ago.

I dont now if its a legal issue in this state, or a potential liability insurance, or what - but my dentist  doesnt even do them and removed any I had. However, shes VERY "high tech" - digital xrays, laser drill, laser whitening, etc so it just might not be cutting edge enough for her. I never had problems with the ones I had but the new ones sure look better. :)

I'm now 40 years old.

I have had one filling, when I was seven - which fell out six months afterwards and was never replaced; presumably never needed in the first place.

I havent seen a dentist in 21 years, and have no problems with my teeth.

I cant help but think that private dentistry (the prices of which have kept me away) encourages dentists to produce work for themselves.

Lady E, that is incredable.  some people simply have good teeth.   you must floss and brush and avoid sugar.

I brush Rog, but thats it. Although I've never been a fan of fizzy sugar drinks and stopped eating sweets when my brother was diagnosed diabetic - he was 11 and I was 13 - didnt seem fair to eat sweets when he couldnt.

While LadyE's lack of need for dental care is great, it bears mention that dental health should be taken REALLY seriously. I avoided the dentist for several years because #1 he was a butcher who left me in pain for three days after a simple cleaning and #2 I didnt see any problems. I did over the counter whitening, brushed flossed, flouride, waterpik, no cavities etc.  However, a situation arose where I wound up going to the dentist again and let me tell you I paid dearly for my years of neglect. The previous dentist broke my jaw during a wisdom tooth extraction and it healed incorrectly - leading to chronic headaches etc. I also had a low grade infection from the bone chips he left behind that caused all kinds of problems.... As a result I had to have some fairly major dental surgery, antibiotic treatment etc. All looked fine, I had a "million dollar smile" with a cesspool below the gumline that once she cleaned up took care of a whole laundry list of other maladies like headaches, recurring sinusitus, symptoms I attributed to allergies, etc... I suffered through one hell of a lot of "migraines" and "head colds" and "allergies acting up" and various other discomfort all of which stemmed from a dental problem that I didnt even know I had.... I LOVE my new dentist!!!!

I just had a temp crown put in yesterday.  Perfectly pain free except for the bill.  It's the only major dental work I've ever had besides silver fillings in my molars when young.  Now I'm one filling less because of the crown.  I hate dentists even when painfree.  I just can't stand metal against my teeth and strange things in my mouth.

edited to replace words with the correct ones.

I totally understand where you are coming from. Try a really high tech one, mine uses a laser instead of a drill and an ultrasonic wand instead of that waterjet / scraping thing... I was seriously dentalphobic and now its like "Oh cool appointment on the 29th!" Technology is grand!

healthy gums are important.

I floss.  The gook at the gumline can effect ones health- as can an infection. I know a lady who  decided no more cavities so she had all teeth pulled. 20 years later at age 40ish she had to have a surgery.  bone from her hip put onto her jaw.
so while she thought she escaped --she did not.

looking back- i would have shot the tooth fairy.  reduced sugar 10 fold, went to dentist more often.

i stayed away for 7 years during the aids scare.....

they can do wonders with teeth. however it does cost alot of money.

OH- one comment I made after a lost tooth. no one ever told me food taste different when one looses a tooth. it does. the flavor sensation swishes around differently... well now I know.

It really depends.

It sounds like you did the right thing by your teeth by regularly taking care of them and avoiding sweets. And it is true that the healthiness of one person's teeth is not comparable to those of another - some people do really have extraordinary resilient teeth!

My father, for instance, is much like yourself - he has had one possibly unnecessary filling in his whole life. He still has all of his wisdom teeth besides. They are all straight and are unusually healthy and a very decent ivory color. I have not been so blessed. My mother has crap teeth and I guess I am somewhere between what my father and mother gave me genetically. I have several fillings and all of my wisdom teeth had to come out.

If you are experiencing pain from eating or even just from sucking air - you will really wish you had access to a good dentist. While you might be willing to lose some teeth (depending on the location in the mouth) to simple extractions; other teeth you will absolutely prefer to restore to their natural function and appearance.

You don't need or care about the dentist until you need one, and then it will be all you can think about.

I found a great one that does a hot wax hand dip while your teeth are being cleaned, plus they use nitrous while cleaning which takes care of that icky scraping feeling. My favorite thing is that there is no more 'rinse & spit' (yeah okay, I can't spit to save my life, it dribbles) but instead something sucks the water and cleaner out! Unfortunately they are refusing to redo all my silver fillings (all 8 molars), all of which are in really bad shape. I can't find a dentist willing and there is no way I'm going to an oral surgeon without insurance! On getting regular care I totally agree. You can have a minor infection you don't know about that will end up effecting or possibly damaging your body including the heart. If things are taken care of instead of giving in to the fear then you won't fall into the place of extensive repair nearly as easily. For those that use at-home whiteners, please please use caution and do not overuse them. My teeth are permanently damaged in large part to using them and I didn't even use a whole box! They can be super corrosive. There are a lot of drive-thru whitener places including malls out. Everything I've seen or read on them says use caution, many areas require no training or license to work on peoples teeth.
