The Sunday night premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” met with a 3½-minute standing ovation -- nowhere near a festival record, but a reaction of respect, appreciation for the film’s craftsmanship and its nostalgic sensibility and style.

Wow. That's almost as long as the standing ovation they gave Kevin Smith for "Mallrats" (4 minutes) and almost half as long as the Michael Moore film, "Farenheight 911" (8.75 minutes) So, I guess we can rest assured that the french have impeccable taste.

Not everyone was as impressed. I'll have to wait and see.

"CANNES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" seems to be more of a sequel to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" than to the last film in the adventure series 19 years ago."

The review gets fairly harsh.

LOL..The Original Reviewers of Star Wars (first release) panned the movie as trite, predictable and juvenile. That changed as lines wrapped TWICE around the block to see the movie. By the second week of release  as old and young plopped down their $$$ to see it for the 3rd and 4th times, they were praising it as fresh, new and at the same time nostalgic for the serials of yesteryear.

I find I tend to like the movies the reviewers pan and hate many of the ones they praise.

Since at 55 I know how much I have slowed down since I was 35, I am going to be very interested to see how well Harrison Ford handles the close up hard work at 65. I know he has stunt doubles for most of the long shots, but, they can't do everything for him.

As for the Crystal Skulls, yes they would tie back more to Close Encounters the prevailing theory is that they were produced by aliens, and that the 13 skulls will/can prevent the destruction of the World and the Human race when they are all together. Me? I am not so sure that anything will prevent our wiping ourselves out...

Stalone looked still good for an oldie in Rambo 4. I guess Harrison has it a bit harder because the movie is not just about showing muscle.
We go watch the film..and judge about it. Which is the only right way.

Actually, if you want a great flick to watch that will make you remember what it was like being a kid, watching movies like that, you should rent "Son of Rambo" a comedy about these two kids trying to make a shot for shot remake of the Stallone film in thier home town... It's one of those movies that makes you laugh... because it's hitting pretty close to home...

And I'm planning on taking Thursday off too. I didn't say Indy 4 was going to be bad... I'm just saying that the audiances at French film festivals aren't much of an indicator.
