I am by every definition Happy. Yet every day off my life, I feel like I am waiting for the hangman to come down from the gallows for me!

I have :

  • money in the bank.
  • a retirement fund.
  • a car.
  • an apartment, no room mate.
  • People that love and care about me.
  • Feel good about my relationship with God or as other's may see a higher spirtual power. Or atleast don't fear dying and going to hell.
  • Have an Education, and talent that make me marketable.
  • Got an OUTSTANDING Job review last year.

So if I have all these things going for me, do I constantantly feel like I am waiting for the bottom to fall out.

I even noticed today, that colors and sensations are sharper than ever before in my life. They say that colors and sensations are often dulled if you are depressed.

I can look at the leaves on the trees and I see the way sunlight plays off them, I find enjoyment in the way that simple water tastes.

I wonder if I have been depressed for so long that now that I finally have gotten out of it, I am suprised and that my long histroy of misery leaves me with an after taste

:: shrug ::  Hard to say but my first thought is anxiety brought on to some feeling of dissonance regarding your circumstances.  For example, such anxiety could be brought on by feeling you don't deserve what you have... or it could be brought on by fears of losing what you have due to circumstances beyond your control.

See a therapist if it bugs you that much.

Actually this was an assertion of the OP's power over his life.

I can top it. Wanna see ?

I was supposed to be at work on Monday, I show up Tuesday still unable to work. I told the boss straight out that I had done a bunch of coke, and then he loaned me some money.

One of the things I am most happy about is that I really have no enemies.

(Actually, T8's story isn't entirely true.

I'm his boss, I've been waiting for a chance to fire his lazy ass for months, there was no one in the office when all the above occurred, and I turned the parking lot video on just as he was leaving, he with a big stack of 100's in his hand, I called the cops 35 seconds later and told them I'd been robbed but I was "so stressed by the event, all I can remember is that it appeared to be a current employee and he had a very large gun....hey!!!! why don't we see if any of this showed up on our security cameras?"....which of course, we did....and there was T8 with all that money and a big smile on his face, driving off....

According to the police it's a slam dunk....and he'll be in prison within 6 - 12 weeks).

Gris, they refuse to take me to jail. I mean it. There are tens of thousands of unserved felony warrants in this city alone.

And I know how to play the game. I may be a sociopath, but I am not yet a felon.

Perhaps you're focusing on measures of happiness that don't bring you fulfillment.

Money is only useful where you have some genuine interests to throw your money at.

A job? They're ten a penny and a means to an end.

A car? metal and rubber welded together.

God? He looked on as his own son was stoned, beaten and nailed to a piece of wood - don't expect too much from him.

An apartment? A roof over your head is a basic necessity. The equivalent would be a mother congratulating herself on the grounds that she brought a child into the world and proceeded to be a less than satisfactory mother.

People that love and care about me? What about someone whom you can love?

Perhaps you need a woman in your life - someone with whom to share your spoils.

In the event you don't like your situation, change it.

Bingo! JohnSteed, I get a sense that while you have a career you enjoy and all the financial trappings to show that you have done well for yourself, on a more personal note, there isn't anyone stirring your emotions - you're playing 'safe' and lacking that romantic/passionate element to drive you.

It IS an interesting comment, but I'm thinking he meant that he can afford to live on his own without needing another person to split the bills with.

On the other hand, I was struck by that comment as well. It made it sound as if he is very alone.

Ok so you can check most of the boxes that equate to happiness by societies standards...house, car, job etc.  But what about you?  What are your values?  What are your dreams and goals?  Do you feel as if you are living each day in line with your values?  Maybe acknowledge the feelings/thoughts you have (eg. this could all be taken away from me) allow them to be there and continue living your life in a way that is meaningful to you.  You can have lots of uncomfortable and/or unhelpful thoughts/feelings, it doesn't mean you have to buy into them or allow them to negatively impact on your life.

The kids today have no idea how absolutely perfect it was to come of age in the 80s.  The 80s were so amazing. I suppose every generation has their marvels.

As to happiness dude., if you have your health, you have EVERYTHING.   trust me on that.

I dunno, I get really tired of whining self-centered selfish people who can't see the world except through their own self serving interests.  Grow up, you are blessed, quitcherbitchin and do something for someone else maybe?  Now, you might just happen to find something fulfilling in that.  Depression - the "in" disease,
