LadyEllen -> handling the Chinese earthquake (5/14/2008 2:54:57 PM)

Wondered what others thought about how the Chinese are handling the earthquake?

From the coverage here, I must say I'm very impressed.

Although of course, with the Olympics coming up and the hopelessness of trying to restrict reporting (as is the case normally when there's bad news, it seems) on such an event, the Chinese authorities have to put on a good show perhaps?

i almost think that if they didn't give more open information (unlike burma or myrnamar which is restricted as i have seen on the news abut reporters having their face blurred so they would not be recognizeable) that would not be good but the chinese want to keep as much as they want open to the world

I thought the response was remarkable. I think they did it because they had the ability.  I have a hard time thinking that the response was a deliberate attempt to show anybody anything more than doing what was necessary  with a natural disaster.  This might be the time that the international community steps back and starts looking at how they did it right.

So... hold on a minute... the Chinese authorities are doing their best for the population and they are being open about it, so it's public relations.

If they covered the disaster effort up, it would be because China is a sinister foreign communist regime...

The poor fucks can't win, scrutinised as they are under the forever watchful eye of Western concern for the Chinese people [:D] .

Now, see that is what I was thinking. Its as if we are all waiting for the slightest mistake.

As far as the media access and information provided, there may be some connection to the pre-olympics PR campaign, but I think the level of response would be the same if they were keeping the details hushed.

This was a 7.9 (moment magnitude).  I've heard it lasted about three minutes.  It's pretty much impossible to be ready for something like that.  I'll even admit that in a crisis like this, an authoritarian gov't comes in mighty handy.

Now, replace 'authoritarian' with 'organised' and you have a win-win situation :-) .

agreed Heretic! an authoritarian governments comes in handy, because it is centralized and they can be organized....hence they can spring into action right away by sending the People's Army to help out, no need to wait for the province chief to check with his assembly, get the ok, check with a federal autority, wait for a disaster organization to step in....no no. Myanmar or Burma could have done the same, but its leadership is "stupid"....yes "stupid" as this was their chance to shine, get points in international relations showing how "humane" they could have been, allowed the foreign aid workers...I mean they could have clamped down months later after all was said and done...they deserve to be overthrown for their stupidity, lack of logistics, knowledge, etc...and which true dictatorship wans to have chaos on their hands? the idea of dictatorship is to impose order through force if necessary not to allow symptons to grow unchecked into a humanitarian mess....
