Turn the question around and ask them "What do YOU think they are?"

You could also just freak out and start pretending to cry as if you never knew you had anything and then wail at the person about how they could be so cruel to bring up such horrible memories.

My usual response to all completely ridiculous questions like that is to give them my "I'm sorry, you've suddenly started speaking martian" stare.

Tell the induhvidual that's asking you that his or her mother really needs to trim her fingernails. Smile big.
Otherwise i'd just give the absolute minimum response. You gotta keep the syllable count low to get through to some people.
"What are those marks from?"
A whip.
"Why were you getting whipped?"
For fun
"Didn't it hurt??"
Yes.
"Then why did you let them do it to you?"
For fun.

etc...

Real conversation between me and some annoying girl at work:

Her: "Oooh, where'd you get those scars on your legs from, they look nasty?!"
Me: "Oooh, where'd you get your boobs from, they look fake?!"

Win.

So much win...

I have no scars, but I do get a lot of bruises, here at home and at work, which is hazardous.  I usually don't answer questions at all.  I answer another one, that they didn't ask.

example:
"Ouch!  Where'd  you get that bruise?"
"Oh, you know me.  Clumsy as hell and bruise like a banana." Shrug.

It usually changes the subject, and my sex life remains none of their business.  Otherwise, be honest.
"They are from a sexual adventure."  Shrug.  Change subject.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

I have a huge scar between my shoulder blades with an embarrasing story behind it. When asked about it I usually say, "What scar? Oh my god, I have a scar?????"

Telling them truthfully that somebody tried to murder me and failed just doesn't go over very well.

"I was mauled by a bear" once got me some interesting responses.

Howard

ROFL!  I forgot about that one!  I used it once, then put it away.  The reaction was a bit too...  I also tried the "You should see the other guy..." routine.  I stopped using that because it just frightened people.  I'm seriously large, not only wide, but tall.  So the image of immediate violence wasn't lost on the poor creatures.  Now I just opt for bland answers, because rocking their little vanilla world just takes too much energy.  Maybe I'm just getting old!

I LOVE the "Scar??  I've got a scar??"  Must steal that.

All of these answers are great if you don't mind pissing off the person asking questions. But sometimes, its somebody you don't want to blow off or might be interested in having a conversation with, just not on that topic. If you want to just change the topic, just imply stupidity on your part though some platitude. If you say "I was stupid" everybody adds the silent "and I don't want to talk about it". Even more effective has been to also use a conspiratorial voice as if giving away a major secret.

Step 1: lean closer, drop your voice, look at the ground
Step 2: Say "The great thing about being an adult is that your Mom doesn't ask 'How could you be so stupid?'"
Step 3: Look em in the eyes as you pull away a little.

99% of the time, there will be no follow up question. On those rare cases, one of the blow off answers above will work well. For everyone else, They think they know that it was something stupid, done as a child, possibly embarrassing and that you don't want to talk about it. Meanwhile you have not lied or even bent the truth in any way. They will assume that they are not close enough to you to be given the story. Win all around.

I have several accident and operation scars, notably one lengthwise on My left wrist from where a badly broken wrist was repaired by a bone graft from My hip. However, it looks rather like an attempted suicide scar and so gets some questioning looks or even verbal questions from those so bold. My responses have ranged from:
* "I was break-dancing" (well, I was actually folk dancing when I fell and broke My arm in the first place but with My size, actual break-dancing would be so improbable as to stop the conversation dead LOL!), to
* "Wouldn't you like to know?" with a conspiratorial wink, to
* "I'll bet it's even more bizarre than you're imagining", to
* "Look, no matching one on the other wrist, (waving right wrist in their face) so don't jump to conclusions!", to
* "The roadmap of My life is written on My skin and this was just one bump in the road." And I sometimes add, "There are lots more, want to see?" with a suitably wicked grin and hands moving to move some clothing. That usually gets them to back off real quick LOL!

Not sure how well these relate to bdsm scars ... but good luck!

You can quote Gene Wilder from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory:
  • I'm a trifle deaf in this ear.  Speak a little louder next time.
  • I'm sorry, but all questions must be submitted in writing.
  • You should open your mouth a little wider when you speak

"I'm not allowed to discuss it, pending trial and what not..."
Then shrug with a knowing grin.

That's how my friend explained a surgical scar across her throat. People stopped asking after a while.

I usually blame mine on my cat, which I feel bad about since neither of them would do such things. But oh well, people usually just accept the answer and move on.

You could always say from "Rough Kinky Sex" while wearing a smart ass smile on your face.   You don't have to even mention anything about a whip.  This way you are not really telling a lie, but you are not getting into details, such you were whipped.

You always tell them you went through a tribal ritual, and start talking about things such a head space, energy release, the great amount of pain you were amazed that you could take.  hahaha...  then start talking about people that suspend themselves in the air on rope with hooks in their body.   Ask them if they have ever heard about it before, and if they ever thought about giving a try.  hehehe...
