Yes.. catch the play on words there, folks :) 23 years ago.. I got my first parrot. I became totally addicted and after 18 years of parrot ownership, I was parrotless. I bought a parrot from a friend whom I introduced to the parrot lifestyle years ago. She was down sizing her flock and I took pity on the very last one. Sir William,.a beautiful double yellow headed amazon, has come to live with us I swore.."just one parrot.." Well, another friend is now moving to Colorado. A yellow naped amazon she bought from me during time of duress has lived with her for 15 years. So I helped out and bought her back. Ok.. so now I have two..I swear.. I'm stopping here. Except that William is a male..and Lolita is a female and they like each other A LOT! They would have hybrid babies. I see myself hand feeding and "making room" for yet MORE parrots. It's an addiction I tell ya..an ADDICTION. Anyhoo. I've had luck raising the small birds. If anyone has experience in creating a nesting environment for the amazon parrots.. please give me some advice. What were your successes and failures. Right now I have the cages side by side with the doors open and they visit each other quite nicely. And it's hilarious to watch! It looks like they are playing tag :) Lolita is quite the seductress. William is still trying to figure out what to do. The hormones are there but he has no idea what to do.. He's about 6 years old (very young yet) and Lolita is 15.

Just as an aside here..my friends are "getting up in years".. and one has informed me she has willed me her African Greys and her Caique. The one moving to Colorado is thinking of offereing me her blue fronted Amazon.. Now, I need to break it to my husband.. "Honey.. only 6..I promise.. I'll stop at SIX!" I fear I'll run into a trench-coated parrot pusher some night.. as he opens his coat to expose a mullocan cockatoo.... "ya need a parrot?" I can feel my palms sweating as the perspiration begins to bead on my forehead.... would I buy it..or go running screaming into the night...

Actually, I thought of that. I pulled up a youtube vid of a parrot "dancing" on the floor. It's sounds seemed to fuel the fire :)

I gave up. Now this is in my lap. (One of those "when you stop looking for it.. you find it" situations) I'm sure I have the correct knowledge for the mechanics and nesting materials needed.. I'm looking for the odd information that another experienced bird keeper might offer about the Amazons. (I was a wiz with canaries and cockatiels :).

I have six so far in my house. Two Senegals, two Lovebirds, one Rosy Bourke, one Pied American Budgie and one Cockatiel. I've had birds since I was five, with a ten year break in my 20s. They are such a hoot! You can't help but laugh at their antics. I have a timneh african grey, two greencheek conures and a budgie. Are you really sure you want to create a hybrid? I don't know about amazons, but i know that mccaw hybrids are very temperamental, and emotionally unstable (so to speak). maybe you should just let them be plutonic pals, and avoid the issue. my Sir has told me that i have all the birds that i can have. (whine) i just want one more.............................................................................

I'm with ya, honey... I LOVE parrots... I've owned an African Grey, as well as a yellow front Amazon...the Grey had been abused before me, and would only allow me to handle him...couldn't have that with little UM's around...so I had to sell him... my yellow front died from inhaling vapors from melting plastic...my ex had a kerosene heater out in the attached garage, and absentmindedly laid a tupperware lid on top of the heater...broke my heart... One of these days, I'll be getting a new little Grey...either an African or a Timneh... I'm sufficiently jealous!

I blame my former slave for drawing me into THE PARROT LIFESTYLE! [:D] He is long gone, but my rescue grey Jed, aka THE KING OF DESTRUCTION will be with me for decades to come~~or so I hope. Our original goal was for Jed to become Close Personal Friends with Hugh's Alexis, but they would have none of each other. Just as well, considering.... At age 10, Jeddie decided to display nesting behavior. Why? To vex and perplex me! To this day he has never masturbated so far as I can see, has never puked up food for me or anyone else, and has shown no attempts to "mate". (My arm had an intimate moment with a male Eclectus, so I know!) But, excavating nests was the order of the day for a few months. Let's all be glad that he didn't carve out any drywall....

I had a harlequin macaw (a type of hybrid) that was a sweetheart- so it depends on what you are combining. A greenwing macaw is a more gentle variety. I'd prefer not to blend species, but this female needs a mate as badly as he does. And even in the wild there hybrids occur if the species is not readily available. Besides, they have already started bonding. I'm letting fate take it's course. I just want them happy.
