I completely agree with you on this one, we have a tv charirty night once a year on average called Comic Relief. Much of the money raised goes to help out people in need, but not with food aid, but with aid to give them the opportunity to grow food! Despite what many think, a lot of the people in Africa have pride and self respect and don't want free food handdouts. What they want and what they need is the means to produce the food that they already have the ability to do.
One of the key projects Comic Relief have funded in Africa is the digging of deep wells which do not dry up seasonallty and can not only supply the village its dug in with fresh clean water, but also the livestock and with the a dedicated irrigation system they can grow their own arable crops.
These people know what they need to survive, it's odften robbed from them by corrupt governments or equally corrupt freedom fighters who often become bigger crooks that that the people they intend to overthrow.
What the US has done in throwing money at goverrnments that they decide to support, often because they are anti-communist has done nothing to assist world peace, infact in many cases its driven people to join the opposition because the incumbent US supported government is bloody awful!
The British has given up its empire because we wised up to the fact that it is not in our best interests to interfere publically in others countries business. The commonwealth may still exist, but apart from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland & Wales, no other part of the old empire is ruled from Whitehall. The South Africans rejoined the commonwealth the moment white ruie and apartite was disposed of, as they now were eligible to rejoin. They left before they were expelled.
The commonwealth remains a very useful system for preferential trading amongst friendly nations. That is the sort of influence the US administration should be trying to nurture, not the good old Wild West style going in guns blazing openingly telling people how to live their lives and what standards to maintain!
If the administration carries on with this gung-ho attitude all they are going to do is alienate other countries populations. No-one takes kindly being told how to live, we found that out a long long time ago.
