Hi. Does anyone use IVR? I would like callers to my landline to have to press 1 to ring my phone. The whole point to it is so I dont have mechanized computers calling me 3x a day. It is a landline- not VoIP. I dont mean answer machine, I mean that a human has to trigger my phone to ring. [if I turn ringers off- then I miss calls from family] ??

Talk to your landline provider. Many offer the service you're looking for - Qwest calls their version of it "Security Screen". http://www.qwest.com/residential/pdf/user_guides/english/SecurityScreen.pdf If you haven't signed up on the federal Do Not Call list, you may want to do that. It will really cut down your telemarketer calls. https://www.donotcall.gov/

Verizon is the carrier. There is not other choice, unless one does VoIP. every business i call has the "press 1", I am on the do not call list.

There are digital voice announcers and call zappers out there that you can hook up to your phone line. A basic DVA will cost $200-$500. Check out http://www.vikingelectronics.com The call zappers are $30-$50 but are really annoying and dont' work all that well. IVR and the call processing features that businesses use are a different kind of thing and wouldn't be available to a residential land line customer except through their service provider. Check with Verizon. Qwest is usually the last to have anything, so Verizon probably offers a service similar to the Qwest thing. They may have other features like anonymous call rejection that will help to cut down on unwanted calls. You may want to check to see if you're registered on the Do Not Call list. The registration is only good for 5 years. If you signed up when it first started your registration has expired and you are once again fair game for telemarketers. http://www.donotcall.gov/

You don't have caller ID? I won't answer the phone when I don't recognize the number. I let the call go to voicemail, then I decide if I want to call them back.

I was thinking an ans machine where one has to select a mail box to leave a message. being that a computer makes these calls, I would think that is illegal under the email spam laws.

2 more of these calls today. This makes over 600 calls! robo calls. I guess I need call attendant - a nortel thing. either pay tons of money, unplug phones and miss family, or answere hundreds of calls triggered by a computer which I have no way of stopping.
