There is a neat episode of "No Reservations" with the chef from NY from i think over a year ago... Anthony Bordain a noted chef in NY is the star of the series..did i spell that right?  Well...he goes to Japan and eats fugu and many other yummy things...He  says it really tastes quite bland but it was an experience he survived..ha ha....they put a miniscule amount of the poison in the dipping sauce....numbs the lips and such...no thanks..that wouldn't be my thing!  just my two cents....

Yep, they mention him briefly in the article..... I've never even tried sushi, so this fugu/blowfish delicacy might not be on my agenda....

You should really try sushi...man..i grew up as such a picky eater..and did eat sushi once back in the 70's at a country club...yuck..but now..i love it....i would do it just to say you did and you might surprise yourself and say..wow!  he he

Edited to say:  i tend to go for the not so low cal sushi....Eel is a cooked one with avocado and other things...tempura shrimp..but raw octopus and clam and such can be yummy..just close your eyes and eat..what is the worst that can happen?  i think tasting a fishy thing is my worst thing and i hate anything with cucumber in it..yuck!

I'll almost certainly give it a shot.... I had lunch at a Chinese place today, and as usual, looked at the sushi bar, but got nothing from it.

Put a dab of wasabi in the dipping sauce, Level.  Makes all the difference.  Sushi is fairly easy, but I've  been told the literal translation of sashimi is, "Ha!  He ate it!"

Japanese horseradish, really.  It certainly adds heat, but also a great flavor.  Just a tiny little dab to start with.

The fugu fish reminded me of an episode of the Simpsons.  Homer tried the fish, panicked when he thought he was poisoned by it and went to the doctor in the emergency room.  The doctor told him he had approximately 46 hours to live which was a  (D'oh) moment.  It was such a funny episode because Homer would say "Fugu me!"

I love umi. It is certainly a little odd looking but I love the taste.

For Level and anyone else who has never tried sushi, I recomend it heartily.

Start with a maki, there are a variety of good basic raw and cooked items that even an unadventurous eater will like. California maki is crab or Krab with some veggies and is quite good and the seafood is fully cooked. Tekka maki, raw tuna, is quite good. If the sushi restaurant is any good they'll have a sampler of some sort that isn't to outre. Although if you are willing to try things simply going into a sushi restaurant and sitting at the bar and telling the chef that you are a beginner and letting him make you a few pieces is an excellent way to get acquainted with sushi, the chef will know what is really top knotch that day and that can make a huge difference.

BTW wasabi can be too intense for some people. You can spice up your sushi experience by just touching the wasabi with a pair of chopsticks and then stirring the soy sauce in the dipping dish  with the same chopsticks. Do not get fooled by anyone into consuming any more of the green paste than that until you tasted it.

Just to clarify, while I think you're likely delightful, I was refering to sea urchin roe.

Yes, I'm sure you were but while it's true I am a bit odd looking I am quite a bit more delightful than sea urchin roe.

Off to bed before I get any sillier.

I appreciate the tips, Ken. When I take the plunge, I'll be sure to post the results.
