Israel is 60.

quote:

The Jewish people are marking the 60th anniversary of their national rebirth, the founding of Israel, on Thursday with the usual military flyovers, flag buntings and televised reminiscences of aging pioneers.

But there is another form of celebration planned, and its sponsors believe it says something about the national character: a three-day conference of some of the best minds from around the world on some of the biggest challenges facing humankind — and especially the Jews — in the coming decades.

"The brain enriches the pocket, not the other way around," Shimon Peres, Israel's president and the patron of the conference, said in an interview. "We are a small land and a small people, but we can become a daring world laboratory, and that is our desire and plan."

quote:

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel celebrated its 60th birthday with barbecues and military display on Thursday but the party was marred when police announced they were investigating whether the prime minister had taken massive bribes.

Ehud Olmert said in a late-night televised statement that he had taken cash for a decade from an American businessman but insisted they were legitimate campaign donations and refused to resign unless the attorney general indicted him.

Doubts over his future could derail U.S.-backed efforts for a peace deal with the Palestinians already beset by squabbles over Jewish settlements and violence in the Gaza Strip.

quote:

JERUSALEM - A Jewish astronaut greets Israel from space.

Revelers try to set a record for the most people singing a national anthem. To celebrate turning 60, Israel is staging fireworks, air force flyovers and a birthday bash for anyone born on the day the Jewish state was founded.

Israel is marking its 60th Independence Day, which began at sundown yesterday, with a great sense of pride but also uncertainty about its future and doubts about prospects for peace with the Palestinians.

Six decades after rising from the ashes of the Holocaust, the Jewish state is still plagued by threats from abroad and an identity crisis at home.

It's a nice thought, Level. Just wondering how this thread will turn out...

kittin, how do most threads turn out  here? [:)] Anyway..... there is always hope, lovely lady.

You are correct that most tend to degenerate into slanging matches, but this phenomenon tends to be spectacularly accelerated when Israel is the subject of the thread. Still, as you say, there is hope :-) .

From the linked article:

"They include statesmen like Henry Kissinger, Vaclav Havel, Tony Blair and Joschka Fischer, but also Sergey Brin of Google, Terry Semel of Yahoo and Rupert Murdoch, along with seven Jewish Nobel laureates and President George W. Bush."

Dammmit... Who let Kissinger and Bush know about this?

DomMeinCT -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 6:49:42 PM)

I'll hold out some hope too.

Happy Birthday, Israel.

Bethnai -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 7:19:00 PM)

But this is awsome stuff, how could something this simple get all jacked around?

"All jacked around" in what way?

Bethnai -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 7:58:33 PM)

Israel has been at war or getting ready for war since the get go.  Cash flow and intelligence has had to be primarily to the arena of self defense.
The people that live in Israel are not all Jewish, they have their internal battles just the same as the US has and they are still here. Sabra is huge and where you come from in Europe is huge. Really, how could one take from that? How could one jack that around? They have managed to stay for 60 years and beaten some when it wasn't thought they could.

Level -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 8:06:06 PM)

Israel will endure. [;)]

Bethnai -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 8:14:27 PM)

Oh yeah.

MasterKalif -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 8:20:04 PM)

happy birthday Israel...

However as to why they have been around this long and beaten some as someone said, its because Jewish immigrants that populate today's Israel came from Europe; that means they brought with them educated scientists, lawyers, technicians, teachers, etc, etc....and not only their personal knowledge but the cultural baggage from an old Europe they were leaving behind; the Palestinians were locals farmers with little skills, lacked education and civic education as well....the new Israeli state also treated them as enemies from day one.

Let us hope for peace some day...

Bethnai -> RE: Birthday candles in a sea of gloom (5/8/2008 8:42:05 PM)

Ok, my bad.

I'm going to use love, peace and chicken grease as my mantra.

I won't lie, though. I am already starting to twitch.
