We have a group over here that disable speed cameras - using shotguns, paint and even pulling them down with tractors.

Naturally, I wouldnt suggest anyone in the US do the same, nor would I endorse such action.

They missed a couple that I know of in Iowa.  Places where the speed limit sudenly drops from 45 to 25 and the cops like to sit there to catch you.

One of the photo radar companies talked the local government here into allowing them to put vans around the city and revenue share the citation revenue with the city.  A lot of local people weren't very happy and first did things like covering the windows of the van but that was illegal.  The latest anti-speed-van technique is they camp out about 100 feet in front of van with flashing lights and signs saying the speed van is just up ahead.  The cops can't stop them from doing it as it's not illegal and it renders the van useless as everyone slows down in time to avoid a ticket.

Here in St. Louis they have the bright idea of electric.. satellite controlled.. speed limit signs. They can be changed at any time to any speed...I can see some abuse coming when they switch over.

Thanks for the info. Being a former truck driver I have about 50 different speed traps across the country to add to the list. Although I will not add certain ones because they are for safety reasons not monetary reasons.

This is the real key right here.

I think much of the reason that traffic enforcement is so bizarre in this country is that it's done for revenue, not for safety.

Why not just fine everyone for every mile they drive incrementally and save a huge amount of money on enforcement if that's how you are doing it?

I found one in Livonia, near my house, but I am not sure what the point is. The problem they have is the corner of Middlebelt and Farmington. It's a no turn on red corner and a high traffic area. The police are known for sitting near this corner and ticketing people for running the red. What I don't understand is, how is this a speed trap. It's clearly posted as No Turn On Red. If your stupid enough to run the light, you should be ticketed. One of the comments mentioned being ticketed more than once. How many times does it take, before you just follow the rules.

They have the one around here. Montgomery, Orange County, NY. A place that enforces school zone speed at 6:00AM Sunday mornings during August when school hasn't been open for over a month and won't be open for another month.

cams are relatively new in US- this isnt ha;ppening too much....yet.

the problem with that idea is mainly the cost, satelite transpoders cost a ton, and for a city youd need at least 2...

not to mention anyone with a laptop could potentionally screw them over big time :)

They are already up and in use.. they are just not issuing tickets yet...spaced along 270  the main ring around St Louis.

We also have a lot of the new red light cameras around the city...no rolling stops here.

I'm a cop in PA and althought we dont have these systems here I can see the day comming.  I echo the opinion of the professional driver above.  When its done for safety all well and good, but as a revenue generator, its just a bad idea all around.  These governments are captivated by the companies that sell these devices in terms of how much money they can make and have to pay no one to do it after the initial cost.  Thats why you see them.  I was told by an instructor many years ago, we are there to protect the public not to persecute them, and I think thats an idea that has gone by the way side for some, but not all.  Hope the revenue generators dont get you and hope you slow down for the right ones.

Not a cop but I see nothing wrong with collecting revenue for law breakers... if you don't speed you will...in most cases... not get a speeding ticket.. If the speed is 30 then 31 should get a ticket... if they catch you.

But if they set a circumstance where following the proper speed limit will still get you a ticket then that is wrong..For instance changing the speed without warning or the proper site distance.

But just enforcing a law should not be looked at as a trap..in my opinion.

In Ontario (Canada) these are mobile, they are in the cop cars and can be anywhere.  Of late they have been nabbing people in radar traps for seat belt violations as well. 

Much of the ones for Toronto and the GTA are old, from 2007.  Since the traps move often I am not sure if this can ever be up to date.

Something else to think about... Many police Departments use fines as a supplement to their budget. Now if they did not collect fines they would ask for and most likely receive more tax money.

Don't know about you but I'd rather speeders pay then me in my taxes.

As a bicycle rider that has to deal with idiots speeding and driving on the road shoulders-the more they suffer for driving negligently-the better. Hopefully the hit to thier wallets mean they will be able to afford less trips to act like twits.
