At the end of ballet class we give reverance ( a ballet curtsy) to the pianist, and then the teacher.  It's like saying thank you.  Most ballet schools require this regardless of the age of those participating in class.

I learned how to curtsy in ballet too a long time ago. I can still do it, but I usually only do when I am joking around with some one. I'm in my mid 20's and a lot of times I get a hesitant response when I put my hand out to shake when I'm introduced, so doing a curtsy might be a little much for everyday. lol. But I like the gesture, I always picture Shirley Temple in the polkadot dress and her curls with that big smile.   But I think it's adorable.

(And the extending a hand palm down when greeted made me giggle- my friend recently had a date with a guy who when I was introduced and I went to shake his hand, he presented his hand like that to me! lmao I warned her-- I don't think he's as straight as you believe. Sure enough, a week later, she found out I was right. But when I get a kiss on the back of my hand by my Daddy... *swoon*, very romantic! lol)

Believe it or not I learned to curtsy in catholic grade school, the boys learned to bow and the girls were taught to curtsy. That was eons ago. Today, I curtsy every day when He comes home from work although when I stand up from the curtsy I bring my skirt up with me : ) What would the nuns say to that?!

I curtsied for my Master the first time I met Him in person.  (At that point, of course, I was only under consideration.)

When I was a girl scout we all learned to curtsy.  As time went on etiquette changed so that both men and women bowed.  For a while the only person you would curtsy to was a Queen, and even that was changed.  I travel overseas extensively and I bow more deeply than many to the Orientals.  It has helped business relationships remarkably well.  I give seminars and will sometimes curtsy at the applause at the end.  I think that people still enjoy seeing it, even though it is no longer a common practice.
