ive been watching this pbs series, carrier, on and off all day. its about life on the uss nimitz, and amazing to me to watch. no matter what i think of whether we should be doing what were doing militarily, these are some damn good kids(yes i know they arent kids, but young men and women, but they look like kids to me dammit). they have many of the same questions that i have about what were doing over there. but they do their job with pride, and it makes me proud. that is all

Yes, carriers, and submarines...they are amazing things, as are their crews.

I work at a hotel where the primary clientele is military. As you said, Seeks.. I may not AGREE with the current debacle overseas.. but these kids (and I know what you mean.,.had one that just got back that -looking at him - I would have SWORN wasn't a day over 15...sigh) are doing their jobs as best they can, regardless of their personal feelings. I'm damned proud of them.

I think the whole series is just fantastic. To film an entire deployment was a great idea. It shows what our military is made of and gives us a glimpse of what their lives on ship are like. I'm proud of them too.

I had relatives that lived on a passageway that the carriers, including the Nimitz, used to go from Bremerton out to sea. It's a fairly narrow passage and the carriers look very impressive going through there. It's also fun to watch the subs go out to sea except they close the bridges for security here when they pass under them, so that can be a pain.

some of the crew members were going to have family meet them in hawaii and get to ride on the "boat" for 5 days as they came back to california (if i understood it correctly). one thing that got me was the reunion classes they showed last night. telling the men who had become fathers while out some things to expect. reminding them to make the first words they said i love you and not man you have put on a few pounds-lolol. and others who were on their first deployment, they were telling them if thier wives had discovered a new level of independance while they were gone, that she wouldnt be giving it up just cause they were back, as it was a survival skill that was necessary. it showed all the different religions that met, from baptist to wiccan, showed a sexy scene in a movie being interupted by the chaplain for the nightly prayer-lol. a mom of 3 who was fighting for custody of her children and her calls to them. i think it is sheer genius in programming. showing the humanity, the good the bad and the ugly.......again, it just makes me proud of them all.

Just a quick mention... if you really like this kind of programming, be sure to support PBS by either getting a membership, or by purchasing the DVD of the series from an authorized source. The Bush administration is working hard to cut off their funding again... mostly because they sponsor unbiased news programming. (i.e. they aren't FOX NOISE)

I watched most of it. It was very good mostly. I'm a Navy veteran and went on 2 WestPac's so I've been to most of the places Nimitz went and have a good idea of how things work on a ship. By and large I thought they did a very good job. IMO they spent too much time on a couple of guys, the pilot transferring during the search for the sailor from the USS Princeton was infuriating, and some things were done that an old sailor like me found rather odd and wanted a fuller explanation, the pilot's wife meeting the ship in Hong Kong which meant that he reported ship's movement to her which in my day was a major crime for instance. The other jarring thing was so many veteran sailors kept referring to the USS Nimitz as a boat. She is a ship and in my day calling your ship a boat was very actively discouraged by the senior enlisted.

Calling a ship a boat reminds me of “this is my rifle and this is my gun” from my service days. My father served on a jeep carrier the Sargent Bay during WWII…6 battle stars in the Pacific. This series gave me an idea what his life was like on board. Butch

Butch You father served in much more cramped and dangerous conditions. Those jeep carriers were tiny compared to the Nimitz.

we can do amazing things. however good customer service via voice commands/menu- that ends up in India is not one of them. nor are the endless commericals and promos to ballyhoo the mediocrity that is peddled. on the otherhand, we deserve what we get.

I stumbled onto this by accident Saturday night and totally got swept up in it -- just as they started to go into all the soap operas that were waiting for everybody when they got back. Stayed up til 4:30AM watching it thru to the end. Now I want to go back and watch all the military stuff... Excellent TV. (the music was crappy, though)

Nuclear carriers are among the most impressive machines in the navy today (Dare I say the MOST impressive?) I can't wait to see what naval technology is going to be like in 50 years.
