Competition has not resulted in a viable society, cooperation has.

Too bad we gave up the latter idea.

It is foolish to posit competition as the polar opposite of cooperation.  Neither on its own can result in anything but death.

Again 52% of the stock is owned by regular folks in pension funds index funds and mutual funds, other than the pension fund you mentioned for the retireed executive all of the rest of that compensation comes into play BEFORE profit.

and those stock options are a huge part of that 389 Million package, those options only come into play if he BUYS in at the price set in the options.

Steal away the profits and who get's hurt? The mucky muck with a 389 M retirent package ot the guy with the 401K that is invested in Exxon and other oil companies. Take the profits and watch as the pension funds start to fail and then who will we turn to to blame?

And the point I'm trying to make is that that connection runs both directions and sideways as well. The profits don't effect just the big executives like many folks think they effect the retirement packages of Teachers unions, Truckers unions, 401K plans etc.

I don't begrudge the workers their pensions, you know that.

I'm speaking to the OP about competition. In our society, Lee Warren is a "winner." I have trouble with that.

Competition is only good if everyone has to do it.
I'd like to see the Oil Companies "competing" against each other.
Lawyers are learning that competition isn't such a good deal these days.
Law degrees are a dime a ton now.
My lawyer in N.H. told me in 2002; "every divorced woman who sold real estate went to law school at night and became lawyers."
"There's so many lawyers out there now that it's getting tough to make a decent living!"
Ah! The "law" of supply and demand!
And, we're not really "competing" in this "Global Economy" like the govt tells us we are or "should" when we're giving foreign aid to more than 130 countries.
You don't "help" your competition!
At this point our tax dollars are helping them buy junk from China.
You can be so competitive and efficient that it takes away the quality of your life.
Forty hours aren't enough, then fifty hours aren't enough, then sixty hours a week aren't enough.
Ross Perot nailed it; "it's a race to the bottom!"
It's a big circle, when you take out the part of the circle that works for a living and they can't afford to live then the circle will collapse and we'll have another depression. The circle won't "roll" anymore like a broken hoola hoop.
All so that "the consumer" could "buy" cheap junk from foreign countries making about 20,000 people insanely rich.

I am by profession a Merchant... I am not a Vulture and provide well for others.
I am a competitor in many ways but, not as you describe. I compete with very large corporations
and am able to carve out a market through hard work and determination. If that makes one a vulture perhaps I should spout wings.

Just pointing out the history of merchants. In the middleages, merchants used to despise peasants because peasants only used what they needed and saved for another day what was not needed. The merchants couldn't make a living if everyone acted like peasants and only used what they needed which was why they hated the peasants so much. Greed, not need is the basis for a competitive society. Personally I think the peasants got it right and chasing ones arse around all week to get enough money to buy what one doesn't need is rather stupid. Since I have taken a leaf out of the peasant's book, I have reduced my working hours to 20 hours a week and I still have more money than I need which I save and use on travel. If more people did the same, there wouldn't be such a worry about the environment.
