Emperor1956 -> OK You Music Buffs -- (4/29/2008 11:15:15 PM)

This was prompted by that detailed question about another song on another thread...OK, all you music trivia buffs:

List songs that throw in a girl's name.  NOT songs about the girl, and then using her name...that would be too easy.  NO, I want songs that randomly throw in a girl's name, either to stretch the lyric, or to make some obscure point in the songwriter's head.   Here are two examples to start you out:

"Sally take my hand, travel south cross land."  -- Pete Townsend [The Who]  Baba O'Reilly  brief rant:  WHO IS SALLY?  she just shows up in the song...there's no girl...there's nothing...and then, wham....she's taking this wasted teen's hand and motoring?  HUH?

AND:  "Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend, I want to guard your dreams and visions"  -- Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run.   Again, WHO IS THIS CHICK?  I mean here's this teenage angst just thundering out of New Jersey, rolling thru the soul-less towns and the malls and all...and then here comes WENDY?  When did she get in the hemi-powered drone? hmmmm?

Can you tell this has been bothering me a LONG time?

E.

This is Darcy

Oooh, tough one, Emperor, but I think I have one for you.

Margery Dreams Of Horses by Counting Crows.

Now the titular Margery gets a few mentions, but then towards the end of the song Adam Duritz throws in the lines...

"I took a train from California, to the far side of the continent / Woke up in Kentucky where a wedding was about to end / I looked up at Anna, she turned back to look at me / It's best to kill the ones that matter, render blind the ones who see"

Now, if you know your Counting Crows stuff, then there have been several references to Anna over the years (not least in Anna Begins off their debut album), but quite why she pops up here is a mystery.

FR:  This is great!  Ones I never heard of.  Keep 'em coming.  (and Darcy, just like "anna" to the Crows, that "Wendy" keeps showing up in other Springsteen songs).

Darcy your mention of Counting Crowes and Anna in the same breath reminded me of one of my favorite songs:

I'm sure theres something in a shade of gray
Or something in between

Anna Begins

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by CSNY    I may have missed it, but I don't think there's a mention of Judy or her eyes anywhere in that song.

Okay I win I got a song that mention 44 womens names

NAILS

88 Lines about 44 women.

ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS

And the Lyrics are Thus.

Deborah was a Catholic girl,
she held out to the bitter end.
Carla was a different type,
she's the one who put it in.
Mary was a black girl,
and I was afraid of a girl like that.
Susan painted pictures sitting down
like the Buddhists sat.

Reno was an aimless girl,
a geographic memory.
Cathy was a Jesus-freak,
she liked that kind of misery.
Vicky had this special way
of turning sex into a song.
Camella couldn't sing,
kept the beat and kept it strong.

Xylla was an archetype,
the voodoo queen the queen of rap.
Joan thought men were second best
to masturbating in the bath.
Sherri was a feminist,
she really had that gift of gab.
Kathleen's point of view was this:
take whatever you can grab.

Seattle was another girl
who left her mark upon the map.
Karen liked to tie me up,
and left me hanging by a strap.
Jeannie had this nightclub walk
that made grown men feel underage.
Mary Ellen who had a son
said "I must go," but finally stayed.

Gloria the last taboo
was shattered by her tongue one night.
Mimi brought the taboo back
and held it up before the light.
Marilyn who knew no shame,
was never ever satisfied.
Julie came and went so fast,
she didn't even say good-bye.

Well Rhonda had a house in Venice,
lived on brown rice and cocaine.
Patty had a house in Houston,
shot cough syrup in her veins.
Linda thought her life was empty,
filled it up with alcohol.
Katherine was much too pretty,
she didn't do that shit at all.

Uh-uh. Not Katherine.

Pauline thought that love was simple,
turn it on and turn it off.
Jean-Marie was complicated,
like some French film-maker's plot.
Gina was the perfect lady,
always kept her stockings straight.
Jackie was a rich punk-rocker,
silver spoon and a paper plate.

Sarah was a modern dancer,
lean pristine transparency.
Janet wrote bad poetry
in a crazy kind of urgency.
Tanya Turkish liked to fuck
while wearing leather biker boots.
Brenda's strange obsession
was for certain vegetables and fruits.

Roeena was an artist's daughter,
the deeper image shook her up.
Dee-dee's mother left her father,
took his money and his truck.
Debbie-Rae had no such problems,
perfect Norman Rockwell home.
Nina sixteen had a baby,
left her parents lived alone.
Bobbie joined a new-wave band,
and changed her name to Bobbie-sox.
Eloise who played guitar,
sang songs about whales and cops.
Terri didn't give a shit,
just a nihilist.
Ronnie was much more my style,
she wrote songs just like this.
Jezebel went forty days
drinking nothing but Perrier.
Dinah drove her Chevrolet
into the San Francisco bay.
Judy came from Ohio,
she's a Scientologist.
Pomerante here's a kiss,
I chose you to end this list.

Eighty-eight lines about forty-four women

The song that Burt (Dick Van Dyke) sings about how superior Mary Poppins is to every other girl he's met and/or dated... (90% composed of other girls names....)

Smith117 -> RE: OK You Music Buffs -- (4/30/2008 5:23:43 PM)

This reminds me of an episode of the sitcom Wings, where this old, annoying guy keeps asking lots of off-the-wall annoying questions. At one point he looks at one of the main characters and says "For Pete's sake......for the love of Mike.....Heavens to Betsy....WHO ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE???"

The guy just looks at him, exasperated from all the stupid questions and says "I....don't....know."

When I was a young man
Kind of free and fancy
Met this little cute girl
She said her name was Nancy
She had pigtails to her shoulders
She couldn't have been much older
She taught me what I had to know
To make a girl not want to go

Butthole Surfers
ยป Pepper

Marky got with Sharon
Sharon got Cherice
She was sharin' Sharon's outlook on the topic of disease
Mikey had a facial scar
Bobby was a racist
They were all in love with dyin'
They were doin' it in Texas
Tommy played piano like a kid out in the rain
Then he lost his leg in Dallas
He was dancin' with a train
They were all in love with dyin'
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pourin' like an avalanche comin' down the mountain.
CHORUS:
I don't mind the sun sometimes
The images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and
Smell you in my clothes
Cinnamin and sugary
Like softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look
Through other people's eyes.
Some will die in hot pursuit
In firey auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche comin' down the mountain.
CHORUS
Another Mikey caught a knife
While arguing in traffic
Flipper died a natural death
He caught a nasty virus
Then there was the ever present
Football player-rapist
They were all in love with dyin'
They were doin' it in Texas
Holly caught a bullet
But it only hit his leg
Well, it should have been a better shot and
Hit him in the head
They were all in love with dyin'
They were drinkin' from a fountain
That was pourin' like an avalanche comin' down the mountain
CHORUS

Lou Reed     "Walk on the Wild Side"            *Holly, Vanessa, Jackie and Candy.

Holly came from miami f.l.a.
Hitch-hiked her way across the u.s.a.

Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her leg and then he was a she
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side

Candy came from out on the island
In the backroom she was everybodys darling

But she never lost her head
Even when she was given head
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo)

Little joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay

A hustle here and a hustle there
New york city is the place where they said
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey joe, take a walk on the wild side

Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin for soul food and a place to eat

Went to the apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said, hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh

Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was james dean for a day

Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that dash
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)

Sanity -> RE: OK You Music Buffs -- (4/30/2008 6:45:54 PM)

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
What's me name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
