Stop using it?  Seriously cut down on the amount of gas you think you must have?
I don't know what you do for a living, or what kind of vehicle you drive.  As long as people insist on driving gas guzzlers and considering it a right to be able to drive anywhere they want to go, whenever they want to go, they've got you in a chokehold.  We do have the power to affect things.  It is just that too many people are too lazy to even consider anything more than complain about it and look to nanny to fix this terrible problem.
*shrug*

We can build more refineries, car pool more, and not speed on the road. If we can create a greater gas supply and have a less demand for fuel, the price will go down.

Here's a 20/20 news clip to explain all that.

Sorry but I am fed up with the responses that put the responsibility squarely on us.  I dont have a gas guzzler, and if I could find work where I could car pool or use public transportation, I surely would.  The fact is that I dont; my work is in rural communities 18 miles from where I live and there is no other way for me to get there but to drive.

So, are there any reasonable suggestions?

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 5:06:36 AM)

the last time i owned a car, gas prices were $1.25/gal for Regular and by the looks of things, i won't be owning one any time soon.

i'm lucky to live in a city that has fairly decent public transportation which a few routes run 24hrs.  avoiding the taxi service (they just raised their fares and are now seeking another 16% hike) and walking more.

pahunkboy -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 5:16:10 AM)

I plan to get my bicycle tires pumped up, and use it.

I have been moving my errands closer to the mansion/compound/estate/castle

LadyEllen -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 5:23:33 AM)

The price of fuel is rising because the price of a barrel of oil is rising. The price of a barrel of oil is rising because the Indians and Chinese (and others) are growing wealthier and increasingly now own cars, which means an enormous increase in demand for fuel, thence oil, and a corresponding increase in price since supply has not met the demand.

We in the west cannot complain about the effects on us of this growing demand, unless we are to conclude that these previously poor people are in some way not entitled to aspire to the living standards we enjoy.

What we could do about it is to switch to alternative sources of energy, or encourage greater supply to be made available.

Neither is going to happen. Switching to alternative energy will cost many influential people a lot of money. Those with the oil are making good profits on one barrel that premeditate against them having any desire to increase supply such that they make the same profit from two barrels. We need also to bear in mind that these high oil prices are what gives the oil producers the cash to come in and rescue our sorry assed banking sector with their sovereign wealth funds.

We have long since been sold out. And we have been every bit complicit with our own sale by way of how we voted or didnt, what we allowed to take place through our apathy and the way we have pursued our way of life for decades.

Aneirin -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 5:45:25 AM)

Better still for the UK at least, cut the tax paid on fuel to help the economy. So, the treasury will lose out, but what is better, the treasury losing or numerous families losing out ?

Public transport, forget it, too expensive and not to be relied upon, despite what politicians tell us to do. I use public transport, and have worked out a journey taken on a bus works out more expensive than what it cost to run my car for the same journey. I get travel sickness on a bus, never got that by car. Bus takes 45 to 50 minutes to do the journey, car took  twenty minutes. Bus fares are going up again very soon and even now I struggle with the cost.

Oh, I got rid of the car, so public transport is my only option, that is until I get a two stroke motorcycle, as that will be the cheapest option other than walk.

Oh interestingly where I used to live in Oxford, there was much hoohar about the new alternative fuel buses, how theywere going to save the planet etc. Last I heard, those buses got quietly decommissioned as being too expensive and problematic to run economicaly.

I make my living with horses and all I can say is ... Have you seen the price of hay recently?
And I will continue to drive my gas guzzler until they make an economy vehicle with power to tow my horse trailer.   I'll guaranty that my vehicle still gets better mileage than the ones our congressmen are driving.
You want cheaper gas, get the government to let us build refineries in this country.  Make them cut loose on some of the oil in this country.  Studies have shown that we have more oil under American soil than is in the entire middle east but politics has capped most of our wells and forbidden us to drill new ones.  You want cheap gas, loosen the noose.  You want to be politically correct, pay more at the pump.

Stop buying stuff from India and China as LadyE alluded to.
Also, call your congressman and senators today and tell them to start "rationing" gasoline.
Then we'll see the price go down.
I wonder if the people who hornswaggled us into this "Global Economy" saw this comming?
What's happening now is price gouging.
They figure they can get away with it with Bush in office so they're ripping out every last penny they can.
If Hillary Clinton gets in office it'll be a whole different story.

Irishknight -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 6:41:32 AM)

I have to disagree with that.  Same story .. different lie to cover it.  Hillary has as much interest in keeping the big money folks in the money as any politician.  Until we stop looking to those with no honor or ointegrity to lead us, we will always be dealing with the same shit.

Good observations Aneirin. I suppose the crunch will come next, when getting to work costs so much that working is no longer worthwhile - so we can expect industrial unrest and wage increases which will make us uncompetitive in the global economy and drive inflation as those wage increases are passed on to the end consumer. And from that, huge increases in unemployment as jobs are shed and firms close or move to cheaper parts of the world - with a corresponding increase in social welfare costs which will necessitate higher taxation.........

And increasing costs for public transport (as well as its notorious unreliability) will come too - not just from fuel price increases, but because we have imported east Europeans to drive the buses who are here so they can send money home or take it home when they leave - such drivers are now working for 15% less than they were before in terms of their remittances because sterling is in the shit. It wont be long before they demand increased wages or leave. And if that doesnt happen, the costs of increased journey times of public transport compared to private, must have enormous knock on effects to the economy, when we are told that traffic congestion on our roads costs enormous amounts.

It wont be long before we look like China 20 years back - all on our bicycles, whilst they look like us driving cars.

But not to worry - the rich and powerful will not be harmed.

MrrPete -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 7:39:49 AM)

I'm retired so I don't drive to work. Don't have home mail sevice so I do have to drive to the P.O. I stopped going everyday months ago.

I don't go to Wal-Mart very often [38 mi one way] but when I do go  I do my shopping and gwt some "cheaper"

I drive a GMC van out of neccessity as I'm disabled [knees] and it's easier to get into and out of.

I recommend going to the lowest priced gas station you can without costing more to get than the money you save.

Don't buy anything but regular. no good reason to give them more of your money than neccessary. My vehicles have always run.

Don't go to the store for just a gallon of milk. Only go once or twice a mo. Consolidate trips

One more thing. Since I have to drive the same distance for a movie I wait until they come on TV or PPV. If I do got to a movie I go to Wal-Mart, get gas and shop.

Laverne is located halfway between KS and the NE corner of TX. We have the only traffic light in the county. I use my cruise control and slow down [sometimes :)]

I do all the suggestions I've made. Most of the time I don't drive more than two miles per trip in town.

I'm thinking about seeing if I qualify for an electric scooter for in town use.

pahunkboy -> RE: gas prices (4/30/2008 8:03:41 AM)

interest rates need to RISE.  I do not get 2.25% ON ANY of my loans!  Far from it.  The market is simple- dont loan money out that does not exist.

The true cost of interest is much more then that- heck simply burp and the bank charges you fees.

I seen a loan at 38+%   all legal.

I want to be paid in gallons of gas.

Now that we own Iraq, might we drill THERE?

I have a 150 lb Akita Male. He can pull nearly 1000 lbs if it is on wheels. I am seriously considering a Dog Cart..it is about time he starts earning his food and carrying it home as well
